The Kenya Sevens rugby collected 8 points during the HSBC rugby sevens leg in Wellington, New Zealand.

Earlier, Shujaa overcame USA 19-12 in the semis and Russia 24-5 in the quarters of the challenge trophy title.

Kenya was denied a main cup quarter final appearance after only managing one win against minnows Papua New Guinea in a group that also featured Argentina and England.

They thumped Papua New Guinea 47-5 but narrowly lost 12-17 to Argentina thereafter.

Kenya was overpowered 12-31 by England in their last group match.

Weekend winners

South Africa claimed the third round of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series with a 26-5 win over in Fiji in a windy Wellington on Sunday.

In a replay of Saturday's Pool B encounter, the Blitzboks again beat the Fijians at the Westpac Stadium to cement their spot at the top of the series standings.

Scotland finished in third place after beating Canada 28-22 in an epic bronze final.

Kenya stands at position 10 on the World Series standings with a total of 25 points.

South Africa are top with 63 points, Fiji are second with 51 points while England are third with 49 points.

The team has been handed another tough draw for next week’s fourth round of the 2016/17 HSBC Sevens World Series in Sydney, Australia.

Kenya will play against log leaders South Africa, England and new powerhouses Japan in pool A.
