The Kenyan Rugby Union held its Elections on March 22, 2017 to pave way for a new era. The Election brought together a total of 56-delegates who are eligible to vote.

Richard Omwela retained the Kenya Rugby Union Chairman’s post after topping the poll with 25 votes ahead of Alexander Mutai (23 votes) and Rajinder Sembi (9 votes) during the Annual General Meeting held at the RFUEA Ground.

Meanwhile, three new directors were elected to the board. The three directors are Sylvia Kamau (46 votes), Ray Olendo (37 votes) and Ezekiel Owuor (33 votes) who topped the polling for the four available seats alongside Ian Mugambi (38 votes) who was re-elected to the board for a second term.

Omwela said he will institute a committee that will lay the ground work that will include sourcing for sponsorship and proper training to ensure Kenya makes to Japan.

“We want to seriously focus on developing the Under-19 age group so as to have strong side by 2019,” said Omwela.

The AGM also saw the adoption of a motion to increase the term limits of elected office bearers from the current two to four years with effect from  the 2018 Annual General Meeting. 

During the AGM the Board also discussed the annual Report as well as receive and consider the balance sheet and statement of accounts for the past year.


Previously Chairman Richard Omwela had been accused of being an “absentee” chairman during his second tenure in office.

The Union will now be focusing on the how to uplift the rugby affairs in the country, in terms of Supporting local talent.

The election is coming at a time when Kenya’s Shujaa are preparing for the Hong Kong sevens.
