Kenya lift Elgon Cup trophy despite Uganda draw
The Simbas recorded a draw against visiting Uganda but were declared the Elgon Cup champs.
The Simbas will give thanks to their first leg victory (23-18) which catapulted the figure to 56-51 on aggregate for the championship.
They started the match on a tepid note going down 10-0 in the opening minutes of the battle courtesy of Uganda’s Philip Wokorach, who scored a penalty, before lock Charlie Uhuru recorded five points plus two more from Wokorach.
Kenya would then strive to equalize and even go ahead by half-time through Captain Darwin Mukidza, Jack Ojee and Moses Amusala, who pinned the score-line at 16-13 going into the breather.
Uganda came from the tunnel more energized and went straight to the lead few minutes into the stanza. Brian Asaba touched down then Wokorach converted to make it 16-20.
Ojee then completed his brace then Mukidza struck the resultant conversion from the corner to put the Simbas 23-20 up in mid second half.
Towards the end of the encounter, Kenya pushed hard to maintain their lead by extending it to 33 at a time when the match was almost going the Uganda way. The visitors had just hit the 33-points mark before Kenya secured a late but successful penalty try.
The match was doubling up as the Rugby Africa Gold Cup meaning that both teams have started the campaign on same level.
