Why the new winner of Sh230 Million Mega Jackpot will not be affected by the 50% tax

Relief for gamblers!!

According to Sportpesa CEO Ronald Karauri, the tax does not affect winners as it is directly imposed on the gross profit of the betting firms.

“We understand that the government proposed a 50% tax on all gaming firms but we appealed because the amount is too high for us. If the government kicks off the proposed tax , many of us will suffer and therefore we don’t want to reach that point. Also, the 50% applies directly to the betting firms and not winners,” said Karauri.

On Tuesday, Sportpesa announced that a lucky Kenyan had won Sh230 Million Sportpesa Mega Jackpot.

“We are proud to announce that the  worth KShs 230,742,881/= has been WON! It is the BIGGEST amount ever in Kenya!!! We have a winner! More to be revealed in the coming moments!” Reads SportPesa Tweet.

The first winner of the Mega Jackpot, Samuel Abisai revealed that he used to play the mid-week JackPot games with Sh200, that gave him a return of Sh221 million.

Betting firms efforts to have the government to review the heavy tax  was not successsful.

Currently, SportPesa has has withdrawn their Sponsorship of the Kenya Premier League, The Rugby sevens team, the SportPesa All Stars plus the Kenyan boxing team.
