ODM finally unveils strategy to exit NASA

The team has revealed details of its exit strategy.

Should the five-member team give a green light to the exit, the Raila Odinga led party could soon start looking for new political allies, the party secretary-general Edwin Sifuna said in a press briefing on Thursday in Nairobi.

A team comprising of five members – Catherine Mumma, Larry Gumba, Irshad Sumra, Alfelt Gunda and Tony Moturi - has been formed to review the coalition’s performance in 2013 and 2017 general elections’ benefits to the party. If the team finds the coalition unbeneficial, then it could quit.

The taskforce formed, the party said, would review ODM’s ideology, shared values and manifesto, for the last three general elections, starting from the 2007, a time of its formation and remark on the relevance.

“The overall mandate of the taskforce is to examine the general performance of the party in the 2017 elections, to consider and review the party’s ideology, our shared value and manifesto platforms, for the 2007, 2013 and 2017 general elections and remark on their relevance in the current political atmosphere,” Mr Sifuna told a press briefing on Thursday.

The team, it has emerged, is also meant to review the party’s engagement with electoral alliances and coalitions, and how it has impacted on the party’s growth.

The decision to have the task force, according Mr Sifuna, was unanimously arrived at by ODM members in the recently held National Executive Committee meeting in Nairobi, in which he was picked as the Secretary-General.

He added that the taskforce is expected to act independently and later submit its findings to the National Executive Committee for an enhanced decision making. It follows that should ODM fail to notice the impact the other political parties have had on its growth, the party could seek new alliances and political partners.

The new changes comes amid rising concerns to an effect that the party is considering working  with DP William Ruto in the formation of an alliance for the 2022, even as the party denies this early signage.

Kakamega governor Wycliff Oparanya, who deputizes Mr Odinga, a week ago hinted at making a new alliance with the DP, but ODM’s Edwin Sifuna would later dismiss the claims, adding that his seniors had a right to make political statements.

“Every leader in ODM, who are above me in the party, is entitled to their opinion, and I cannot speak for any of them. We have no plans to move out of NASA, I have said this many times.

“What we are saying is that the leaders in both ODM and Nasa coalition should watch out so that we resolve the current electoral injustices before we can talk about 2022. If someone has no blood for such a course, then there is always an alternative,” Sifuna affirmed.
