Raila recognises Uhuru as President in surprise statement

Odinga had previously stated he would not recognise Kenyatta's presidency

On Tuesday, during an interview with Citizen TV, the former Prime Minister referred to Kenyatta as President despite his previous public statement that he would not recognise him.

“I have no issue with the President as a person, we have a relationship as families…We have a long history,” the NASA leader stated.

The tense interview, held at the Jaramogi Mausoleum, begun with one of Odinga’s granddaughters asking him if he is still friends with President Kenyatta.

“That is grandpa Oburu with Uhuru Kenyatta?” the granddaughter asks, to which Odinga responds, “Yes, Uhuru came here”.

The young girl innocently asks, “You are still friends?”

The Opposition leader replies in the affirmative even as the innocent girl remains sceptical of his response.

“Even now you are friends? …aii” she remarks as they move on to another subject.

The two leaders have had a protracted political rivalry, with the Opposition chief stating that he would swear himself in as President, unless Kenyatta agrees to a dialogue process.
