Police Officer Is Shot in Gunfight in Manhattan

NEW YORK — A plainclothes officer was wounded in an exchange of gunfire with at least two men in Upper Manhattan on Thursday afternoon, police said.

The shooting occurred on the street at West 187th Street and Wadsworth Avenue, in the Washington Heights neighborhood, at 4:24 p.m. The officer, who was not immediately identified, was taken to Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Hospital with wounds to his arm and abdomen, police said. He was in serious but stable condition, and was expected to survive.

The police shot two men during the exchange, both of whom were taken to hospitals. One was shot several times and was in critical condition, and the other was in stable condition, police said.
