Professional career
Kinuthia Mbugua started serving in 1979 as a District Officer in former Marakwet and Molo Districts. He served as District Officer 1 in Nakuru in 1980 and in 1981 served as the Chief Instructor at the Administration Police Training College.
In 1986 he was appointed as Commandant, Administration Police Training College while also serving as Deputy Administration Police Force Commandant, a position he held until 1992 before moving to western Kenya where he served as Deputy Provincial Commissioner from 1992 to 2007.
He later joined the Ministry of Water as the Deputy Secretary from March 1999 until September 1999 when he was promoted to serve as the Senior Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Natural.

Political career
Kinuthia Mbugua is a one-term governor who was ousted in the Jubilee party primaries. He stepped don of the race for Lee Kinyanjui in the run up for the August elections after a meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta.
