President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), Nelson Havi, on Sunday announced that he will be taking up a law suit in honour of his late parents.
In a post which announced his change of heart, the LSK President stated that he will be moving to court against the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
"After reflecting on what would have been good for my late father and my mother, both of whom were great teachers, I have changed my mind.
"I will act for teachers to challenge the oppressive Teacher Professional Development Programme imposed by the TSC. Let us get started," he elaborated.
Havi is moving to court to challenge a recent edict by TSC CEO Nancy Macharia, directing that teachers will be required to renew their professional certificates every five years.
"We need to see our teachers conduct research projects and write academic and acclaimed research papers to improve the teaching quality in schools," Ms Macharia explained while issuing the announcement.
She added that the issue had come up severally while the body was pushing for better remuneration for teachers.
The new rule was met with opposition from most teachers who saw it as a burden, considering that they will have to pay Sh6,000 for each of the six modules to be taken over 30 years.
When President Havi was approached to challenge the new terms in court, he initially answered with an emphatic, "No!"
"Teachers, you left Wilson Sossion to be fought to exhaustion by the State. KNUT withdrew all cases against the State when you replaced Sossion with a Secretary of ‘your preferred choice’. Please, stop calling me to challenge the directive by TSC that you be trained afresh," he stated at first.
