A family of four was wiped out in a tragic accident along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway on Saturday evening.

The four died on the spot after the vehicle they were travelling in rammed into an on-coming truck.

The four were travelling from a popular entertainment spot in the outskirts of Makindu town when tragedy struck.

Among the dead are a man, his girlfriend, their four-month old daughter and his sister in law.

Makindu Traffic Commandant, James Rasungu confirmed the incident, stating that “The car was overtaking another vehicle when the accident occurred. None of the occupants of the car survived the accident".

Two occupants who were in the truck escaped with no injuries while bodies of the deceased were moved to Makindu Hospital mortuary.

The accident happened at the same spot where a police vehicle transporting remandees from Mtito Andei Police Station to Makindu Law Courts overtuned a day earlier (Friday) killing one on the spot.

It caused a heavy traffic snarl up along the busy highway as police moved in swiftly to direct traffic.

Road carnage appears to be on the rise with more than 10 dead in a span of less than three days.

On Friday night, at least eight people were killed in an accident involving a 14 seater matatau and a motorbike at Lwandeti along Eldoret – Malaba road in Kakamega county on Friday night.

Reports indicate that the matatu belonging to North Rift Sacco which was ferrying passengers from Nairobi rammed into the boda boda which was ferrying three pasengers at the time of the crash before colliding with an oncoming lorry.

Among the dead are passengers who were on the motorbike.

Several others were rushed to hospital in critical condition with fears that the number f casualties could rise.
