Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Athi River are pursuing a gang that orchestrated a harrowing robbery on unsuspecting passengers who were seeking transport to Mombasa.
The incident left two victims robbed of over Sh409,000 and personal belongings.
The victims, a man from Kiambu and a woman from Mombasa, were waiting for a bus to Mombasa at Mlolongo when a private vehicle stopped, seemingly offering a ride amid nationwide transport challenges during the festive season.
Inside the vehicle were four individuals posing as good Samaritans.

However, the journey took a dark turn near the Simba Cement area in Athi River when the passengers realised their rescuers were, in fact, criminals.
The gang brandished daggers, restrained the victims with ropes, and blindfolded them before stealing their valuables.
Details of the Robbery
The male victim was forced to transfer a total of Sh360,000 from his bank accounts and mobile money wallet, while his Samsung Galaxy phone and power bank, worth Sh75,000, were also taken.
The female passenger lost Sh49,000 from her mobile wallet, alongside other personal items.
After robbing the victims, the gang abandoned them in the Ngarariga area of Limuru, far from their original route.
Good Samaritans in the area assisted the victims and escorted them to Ngarariga Police Station, where the incident was reported. Fortunately, neither victim sustained serious injuries.
Police Response
The case has since been referred to DCI Athi River, which has launched an investigation.
Authorities have intensified patrols and operations to dismantle criminal networks exploiting the holiday season's transport chaos to prey on travelers.
The DCI has called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals or activities to ensure safety during the festive period.
“Let us work together to ensure everyone enjoys a safe and joyous holiday season,” a statement from the DCI reads.
Public Safety Advice
As travel peaks during the Christmas season, police have urged citizens to prioritise their safety by avoiding unverified transport arrangements, especially from strangers.
Travellers are encouraged to use established transport services to reduce the risk of falling prey to criminal elements.
The investigation into the incident continues, with the DCI determined to bring the perpetrators to justice.
