The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Noordin Haji on Monday announced withdraw of charges against 8 suspects involved in the National Youth Service (NYS) scandal.

The 8 freed individuals were released under section 87A of the Criminal Procedure Code.

They included; Clara Mbau, Christopher Malala, Josephat Njoroge, Rodgers Nzioka, Lucas Otieno, Sammy Michuki, Simon Kiiru, and Stephen Muchai.

According to the DPP, the evidence against them was not sufficient but should the police find further information, fresh charges would be filed.

The Prosecution, in its opening statement ahead of the the trial, said that it would prove that colossal amounts were paid as pending bills yet they did not fit the description of a pending bill as they were slotted into the NYS stock of pending bills.

The DPP also said four of the released suspects were turned into witnesses to testify against former National Youth Service (NYS) Director-General Richard Ndubai, former Youth and Gender Affairs Principal Secretary Lilian Omollo and other suspects charged in the scandal.

The trial of Mr. Ndubai, Ms. Omollo and other suspects charged with theft of funds at NYS began on Monday.

Ndubai was nabbed on May 28, alongside assistant director general Sam Michuki, finance manager Mr Mbugua, after the theft of Sh9 billipon.
