Margaret Kenyatta will on Tuesday relaunch the First Lady’s Half Marathon after a two-year break.

It is one of the key fundraising events for Beyond Zero, a flagship programme aimed at saving the lives of mothers and children by preventing unnecessary maternal and child deaths.

The campaign also aims to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV by 2020, besides scaling up the war against new HIV infections among adolescents.

The half marathon seeks to draw attention of stakeholders to the challenges of maternal and infant health in Kenya, besides raising resources to increase access to healthcare for mothers and their babies.

In 2017 the First Lady Margaret Kenyatta canceled this year’s Beyond Zero marathon, saying she was not willing to politicise her desire to contribute to the end of maternal and child mortality.

The First Lady said in a statement that she reached the decision to avoid conflicting the campaigns with her cause to end maternal and child mortality across the country.

The First Lady however assured Kenyans that the cause remains until the betterment of maternal healthcare in the country, and to build the Beyond Zero Referral Hospital was achieved.

“I remain committed to and will not deviate from my ultimate goal, which is the betterment of maternal healthcare in this country, and, to build the Beyond Zero Referral Hospital," the First Lady stated.

"I want to reassure all Kenyans that this is a commitment that will remain with me throughout my life,” she asserted.

She, however, applauded Kenyans for supporting the initiative saying that a lot was achieved together than she imagined possible.
