Why did DP William Ruto speed up former Nyeri Governor Wahome Gakuru's burial? Family questions

The family of former Nyeri Governor Wahome Gakuru is now questioning the motives behind Deputy President William Ruto's involvement in the former governor's burial arrangements.

In a hearing on an ongoing inquiry into Dr Gakuru's death, a representative of the family indicated that they were yet to understand why the plans to bury the former governor were rushed.

Family representative Martha Waweru told the inquiry that plans to bury the late Gakuru started immediately after he died.

"Why was there a hurry to bury daktari (Governor Gakuru) and start the plans even before his body got cold? Investigations and enquiry on what had happened would have been allowed but instead you moved on swiftly," Ms Waweru posed.

DP Ruto gave the directive

A witness who testified before the inquest on Thursday, Mr Wachira Keen, stated that it is DP Ruto who ordered politicians to start planning as soon as they had viewed the body at the Lee Funeral Home.

"The deputy president joined us at Lee funeral Home and he told us to start the governor’s send-off. We were many leaders at the mortuary including Mr Sonko and Nyeri Senator Ephraim Maina," he stated.

The witness added that Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko chaired the first meeting, albeit, it was an informal one at the Serena Hotel.
