18 August 2024 at 00:00A Boeing 737 arriving at the naval air station in Jacksonville, Florida, from Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, crashed into the St. Johns River on Friday night, scrambling emergency workers who were trying to control leaking jet fuel and to rescue passengers and crew members, the authorities said.
Mayor Lenny Curry of Jacksonville said in a Tweet that “all lives have been accounted for.” It wasn’t immediately clear how many people were on board.
“Navy security and emergency response personnel are on the scene and monitoring the situation,” the Navy said in a statement.
The sheriff’s office said “the plane was not submerged.” Photos from the scene showed it floating on the St. Johns River in an image reminiscent of the emergency landing in the Hudson River in January 2009.
