Deputy President William Ruto on Sunday gave the strongest indication that the Jubilee coalition has softened its tough stance against demands for dialogue with Opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Ruto spoke to two international media houses, CNN and Aljazeera, on Sunday evening where he indicated that the current government was willing to engage Odinga in talks so long as they were not related to the presidential election.

The Deputy President stated that the matter of elections had been decided by Kenyans in accordance with the constitutional stipulation.

He indicated that as a sign of their good faith, the government had opened the door for talks on Odinga’s retirement package.

"We are prepared, willing and ready to engage with Raila Odinga just as we are ready to engage with every other Kenyan to discuss the future of our country. In fact, we are willing to discuss terms of his retirement package," Ruto told Aljazeera.

The Deputy President spoke ahead of the much anticipated announcement of repeat presidential results.

At the National Tallying Centre at the Bomas of Kenya, there was an air of anticipation after the IEBC stated that it would be addressing the media at 10 am.

However, as at the time of publishing this story (4o minutes after the scheduled address), the auditorium had little activity going on, characteristic of the electoral commission’s poor observation of time.
