CHICAGO — Chicagoans on Tuesday were picking a new mayor in an election that came down to a choice between one of the city’s best-known, longtime politicians and a newcomer who has never held an elected post.
CHICAGO — Chicago became the largest U.S. city ever to elect a black woman as its mayor as voters on Tuesday chose Lori Lightfoot, a former prosecutor, to replace Rahm Emanuel. When she takes office in May, Lightfoot also will be the city’s first openly gay mayor.
Lori Lightfoot, a former federal prosecutor and sharp critic of the status quo at City Hall, won enough votes in Chicago’s election for mayor on Tuesday to advance to a runoff in April, The Associated Press reported.
Campaign forums have often looked like a reunion of Chicago’s best-known political figures — a former police superintendent, a former public schools chief, a former police board head, a former city clerk.
