I figure as much after having spent a weekend in his hometown of Bozeman, Montana, a place where he and his wife have called home since 2001. For anyone who's seen past videos that document his global voyages, his tough exterior is immediately evident, perhaps a result of having endured multiple and vast climbing expeditions that have taken a toll on him throughout the years.

And yet, as I walked into his modest home and learned more about his life in Montana's fourth-biggest city, one gets the sense that he's more subdued and, well, normal than his public persona may suggest. He is, after all, one of the most famous mountain climbers in the world, a man whose essence was captured in full via the critically acclaimed 2015 documentary Meru, a visually arresting film that chronicled his attempt to reach the Meru Peak of the Indian Himalayas.

As he shows me around his house, the first thing that catches my eye is his vast library of mountaineering books that he's been collecting for the past 30-40 years. Just across from it is what he calls the "intellectual and creative part" of his life, a desk where he can write and get all his marketing and communications squared away. (He's currently Captain Emeritus for the North Face, the outdoors and adventure brand he first joined back in 1983.)

Also in the vicinity is a small room stocked with heavy gear, tools, hardware, and equipment for his climbing trips. And around the corner is a space he built for winding down completely-a relaxing steam room complete with stones where Anker is able to recharge and refresh. For someone who's survived a heart attack at a 20,000 altitude, his life at home is the total opposite of his high-risk lifestyle.

Just hours before, we were in Hyalite Canyon, a range of scenic mountains outside of Bozeman, where he and a team led an ice climbing trek for a lucky group of men and women, many of whom (me included) have never dared to partake in such an activity before. Anker partnered with Dove Men+Care to bring a select group of fathers to travel to Anker's hometown and experience ice climbing with the legend himself. As most of us struggled to go two steps up the icy mountain, Anker would glide one up like it was a tree in his backyard. In fact, this is where he spends most of his time training, taking advantage of the multiple accessible parts of the mountain range to prepare for expeditions.

Back in his living room, he opens up about his training rituals and all he would do to prepare for a big journey (his many climbing treks in the past have included Mount Everest and zones in Antarctica.) "On an expedition to the Himalayas you need to be fit for 5 weeks, so my day-to-day training will consist of 20 minutes of aerobics," he says. Most of his training is done in the mountains here locally, where in his time off he'll go hiking uphill with a heavy backpack and climb new routes.

In one particular moment, our conversation turns toward skincare, something he says he's always been very conscientious about. He first got into it thanks to his two sisters growing up, and, as he shares with me what that experience was like, he picks up his ankle and takes off his sock, revealing an abnormally soft, totally clear foot that most teenagers won't even have. Considering the average person rarely tends to look after their feet, the fact that a rock climber with decades of experience has a nicer foot than myself left me in awe.

Instead of delivering the energy in these large chunks like in a traditional laser, it breaks the energy down into smaller chunks and delivers them very rapidly, so you don't feel pain." On average, you'll have to get six sessions performed about six weeks apart. "The reason for this is that at any given time, only one out of six hairs goes all the way down to the root or bulb," he explains. "In the other five hairs, youre frying the hair follicle but its not killing the bulb, so its going to produce more hair. But in about six weeks, the next set of hairs will cycle into the growth phase, so the laser can destroy it completely, and so on." And so after about 36 weeks, a successful hair removal happens when about 90-95% of the hair is being permanently gone.

Warning: Dr. Akhavan says you cant wax the area, because they need to have the hair follicle there for the laser to be attracted to it. "You want to shave either day of or day before so theres no hair on the surface of the skin," he says. "That way all the energy of the laser can be transmitted under the skin and as close to the root as possible." With the Motus, most people don't feel any redness or irritation after a session. However, high-end salons for men can be found nearly everywhere, and haircuts at these places can easily start at $50 for the most basic service. To be honest, I've always been interested to see what it's like for men who pay a pretty penny to get their haircut at a fancy salon. Like many guys, I want my hair to look the best it can, and maybe a high-end salon could offer that. But is a more expensive haircut really worth the price? I pondered this question as I scheduled a cut with celebrity hairstylist Oscar Blandi , owner of the <a href="https://www.oscarblandi.com/" id="e9905563-3bb4-32de-a657-afd7aa472717"> Oscar Blandi Salon </a> in east midtown Manhattan, which is the largest salon in New York City. Each of his stylists charge between $80 to $200 for a regular men's haircut. While that may seem exorbitant to the average client, I was curious to experience it for myself and see if it's really any different from the haircut I would normally pay $20 for.

Upon entering the second floor salon on Madison Avenue, I was immediately drawn to how huge it was. A tremendous amount of light beams through the floor-to-ceiling windows that surround the sprawling 13,000 square foot space. After checking in with the friendly receptionist, I handed over my belonging and wrapped myself in an Oscar Blandi-branded robe. While passing through everyone to take my seat at Oscar's station, I took note of the clientele that was made up of mostly older, rich-looking women with expensive bags and designer shoes. At one point, I sort of felt like a fraud patronizing a place with so much wealth and bougie taste. I quickly tried to let go of my insecurities and made a solid effort to act like I belonged, accepting a bottled water that was offered to me while smiling at the staff.

Finally, Oscar made his way over and introduced himself to me before we got started. After some quick small talk, I told him how I wanted my hair to be cut. He contemplated my high skin fade request and offered something else instead. "I don't think it should be so short," he suggested. "That kind of look is being worn everywhere. As we are such a big salon, we cater to a mix of primarily established working professionals such as CEO's, lawyers, doctors, finance executives, brokers, and TV personalities. Many of our clients are professionals that work with other people and are in the business/ entertainment limelight. In addition, we also have have a fair amount of younger male clients in their 20s/30s that start young and continue coming back to the salon every year. I would say that our general male clientele lives a good lifestyle and is able to visit a high-end salon.

<h1> What are the advantages of booking an appointment at an upscale salon like yours vs. getting a regular cut at a lower-priced barbershop elsewhere? </h1>

When you book at an upscale salon, you are buying into experience and trust. Someone who works at a high-end salon is held to a higher standard and is therefore exceptionally trained and has reputable experience - sometimes even 20 or 30 years of experience. People like this have seen a thing or two, and they are able to understand the needs of your hair more easily and able to prevent a foreseeable problem. Especially dealing with male clients who mostly have shorter hair, you need to really focus on the different textures (curls, straight, wavy, spiky, etc.) to prevent hair from sticking out on the top or the sides. Often times at cheaper salons, the haircut might seem fine at first, but over a couple weeks it doesn't grow in the way they want it.

<h1> What are some key things every guy should look for when choosing a place to get their hair cut (and when choosing a barber)? </h1>

First and foremost men should do their homework and look up the background of the stylist, their experience, reviews, and the quality of the salon. If you're trying to change or create a new look, its important to have a good conversation with a stylist that will give you the pro's and con's of what will and won't work with your specific hair. Beware, because often times smaller salons will just execute what you ask for without giving a proper evaluation whereas larger, more established salons will engage in a realistic dialogue about what's possible. Lastly, at high-end salons men should look for barbers who fully understand their lifestyle, schedule, the whole package.

With these tips in mind, I realized that if your budget allows for it, a higher-priced haircut definitely has its pro's. For example, in the middle of my cut, a young lady showed me to a reclining chair to get my hair washed. The experience was deeply satisfying and at one point I almost fell asleep while she lathered on the shampoo and conditioner, all while massaging my scalp and running warm water over it with just enough pressure. "It happens all the time," she said about my dozing off. After drying it out with a plush towel, I walked back to Oscar's station so he could finish the rest and apply some product.

While the final result looked nice, my biggest takeaway was that you're really paying for the ambience, attention to detail, and level of service. I've had plenty of inexpensive haircuts that looked just the same, if not better. Though it was a great experience, the entire haircut only lasted about 15 minutes. What I gathered is that it's not so much the price that should dictate where you get your haircut, but more the relationship you have with your barber and your communication with them. For my particular lifestyle, I think my $20 cut works just as well. I will miss the nice robes though.

What's the most you would you be willing to pay for a haircut? For me, I've long been of the mindset that a quick visit to my barber shouldn't cost me more than $20. Not only am I on a tight budget, but it's always worked out for me well. That said, I do know it's different for everyone. In the U.S., the average cost of a men's haircut is $28, according to the Professional Beauty Association. Prices tend to skew much higher in urban, metropolitan cities like New York, San Francisco and Chicag...

Is A Super Expensive Haircut Really Any Better?

Now armed with his own underwear company, his journey has led him on a mission to educate guys about their health-with good reason.

At 46, he still finds himself in and out of healthcare facilities every other month, even though he's been in remission for 14 years (due to all the treatment it took to eradicate the cancer). For many Americans, he says, the exorbitant costs associated with severe medical conditions is a heartbreaking reality. He's also vocal about how underfunded so many rare diseases are. So in order to get better, Scott had to fund his own medical research with his life savings. "As a [then] 40-year-old, it's something that no person should have to do, to use every dollar you've ever worked for to make sure you actually wake up the next day," he says.

This led Scott to look at people like Bono (who co-founded <a href="https://www.red.org/" id="5dd58cef-43bb-3fbd-ae6f-cd70464adb6a"> Product Red </a> ) and try to replicate what they've done. "I'm a huge proponent of taking normal, everyday products, specifically men's products, and use the proceeds to fund innovative medical research in underserved areas of medicine," he says. And from these seeds, a new idea was planted and <a href="https://pariahunderwear.com/" id="3036a4b1-1292-35b8-a1a6-5dc38a401817"> Pariah Underwear </a> was born.

To Scott, the most important part of his underwear brand is and will always be the philanthropic aspect. He gives 50% of all proceeds away to charities that are distributed through the <a href="https://www.thinkdifferent.org/" id="55373a50-b328-34a6-a1f3-6f4099005b4b"> TH!NK DIFFERENT FOUNDATION </a> - an organization that provides grants and program support designed to improve underserved areas of healthcare in the U.S. And as a fair trade underwear business, the facilities used treat the workers the same way Scott says he would treat his workers here in the U.S. Along with fair wages and hours, the company is vegan-based in all their materials. "We are truly changing the way underwear is thought about, made, developed, manufactured and distributed," he says.

Every box of underwear contains a testicular self-exam flyer, a message that "all men need to hear," reads the website. "Since society has failed to educate men on the importance of monthly self-exams we decided we needed to do it ourselves," it states.

In addition to the ethical and philanthropic aspects of Pariah, Scott boldly claims that it's the most comfortable underwear you'll ever own. According to the site, their fabric wont dig in, bunch up, slid, twist or move. "Its as close to going Commando as one can go," it states. Not only that, but Scott says they use a proprietary fabric called CoolClean that literally repels 99.9% of germ and odors.

Scott makes it a point to note that he never sought out to make an underwear brand and make money. He had initially reached out to every underwear company because of a nonprofit he created called Cacti, whose mission is essentially to create awareness about how important it is to do a monthly self-exam. "All I wanted to do was to get my little pamphlet about how to conduct it in every pair of men's underwear out there, and nobody would do it," he says. "Because it would either increase the price of the underwear a few pennies or it would reduce shareholder value by a few pennies."

Eventually, he got to feel a little bit irritated that these companies were putting profits over people, which is when he finally decided to do something about it. "What's interesting is, I'm willing to get any underwear brand my flyer to put in there, because it's not about me selling underwear," he says. "It's about every guy in America between the ages of 15 and 40 knowing that once a month, they need to take two minutes in the shower to make sure they're okay." And for Scott, the same sentiment applies to the medical side. "If every company could just give a little bit of money off of every product just like Product Red does, if we start putting the massive amounts (billions of dollars) that shareholders are making back into making civilization a better place, how amazing is that?"

While not everyone may have gone through a difficult medical condition like Scott, he's nonetheless committed to making sure guys are informed and educated about their health. "Everybody thinks they're invincible, until they have a life-altering disease or situation," he says. "Our proceeds are not to get anybody rich, or to appease shareholders. It's truly to save the world at the end of the day."
