NEW YORK â On Aug. 19, 1991, in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, a car in the motorcade of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, leader of the Lubavitch Hasidic movement, sped through a red light, struck another car, swerved onto the sidewalk and hit and killed Gavin Cato, a 7-year-old black boy from Guyana, while severely injuring his cousin Angela.
BALTIMORE â A reporter once asked soul singer Donny Hathaway, âWhat would you be if you were not a musician?â His answer: âDead.â So ends Ebony magazineâs posthumous April 1979 profile of Hathaway, appearing just two months after he was found lifeless on the sidewalk outside a Manhattan hotel where he was staying.
