Kenyans were on Monday displeased at the water salute accorded to the plane carrying the World Cup trophy as it landed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi.

The plane, which touched down at the airport shortly after noon, received a water salute which occurs for ceremonial purposes; denoting respect and greeting.

While a number of Kenyans hailed the ceremonial gesture, others criticized the move to 'waste' plumes of water at a time when the country is grappling with an acute water shortage.

They questioned the government's priorities noting that the water could have been well placed to put out the recent fires that rocked Nairobi.

Some of the netizens pointed out the irony in having the water salute while the airport's lawns 'resembled those of a desert.'

The  six-kilogramme FIFA world cup trophy was received by President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday at State House, Nairobi.

Kenyans will view it on Tuesday at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) before its departure to Mozambique on Wednesday.
