"At the center stage of this event will be two important items tied to the legacy and iconography of one of rock musics most signature artists, Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, including his custom-built left-handed Fender Mustang guitar during Nirvanas In Utero tour as well as his vintage olive-green cardigan worn at Nirvanas most defining performance and one of rock historys best live performances ever recorded, on MTVs Unplugged in New York," reads the auction description at Julien's Auctions , who specialize in items of significance in contemporary culture .

Nirvana's MTV Unplugged set was different from the traditional premise of the show in a number of ways; not only did the band film their live performance in a single take, but the set-list mostly included lesser known songs and cover versions of tracks by other artists including David Bowie, as opposed to the usual "greatest hits" format. The performance was released as a critically-acclaimed album following Cobain's death in 1994.

Photos of Cobain during the Unplugged performance now rank among the most enduring images of the singer meaning bidding will be fierce when the auction begins on October 25. Other auction lots include a T-shirt won by the Sex Pistols' Sid Vicious, a charcoal self-portrait by David Bowie, and handwritten lyrics from Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan.
