The administrator and a nurse at the Shalom Hospital in Athi River have been arrested following public outrage over apparent negligence.

The two, Thomas Ndolo and nurse Edna Nyarangi, were charged with mishandling a pregnant woman who allegedly gave birth on the floor.

The nurse identified herself in a video clip that was widely shared on social media in which a new mother was seen on the floor giving birth while the nurses watched on and sipped tea.

The man, who captured the video was outraged and kept questioning the nurses over the incident wondering why they were not assisting the pregnant lady whose baby is said to have fallen to the ground.

Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board CEO Daniel Yumbya accompanied by Ministry of Health officials and police also made a visit to the health facility on Monday to investigate the matter.

"It is our findings as a team that there were issues of negligence within the institution and how the patient was treated," Dr Nelly Bosire who was among the delegates noted.

Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua was also concerned about the matter asking DCI to launch investigations and bring to book those found culpable.

In a bizarre twist to the incident, the woman in the incident defended hospital staff and accused the man who recorded the clip of invading her privacy.

She told reporters that she reported to the facility during the last stages of labour and nothing could be done to delay her baby's arrival.
