The journey to 2018 AWCON so far for Kenya’s women national team

The Harambee Starlets have just Equatorial Guinea on their way to a second AWCON appearance.

Kenya’s women national team made their first-ever appearance at the AWCON in 2016 but lost all their three Group B games- 3-1 to Ghana, 3-1 to Mali and 4-0 to Nigeria.

After their first taste of continental competition, the Harambee Starlets under David Ouma have continued their recent good form with a series of encouraging wins and looking to seal qualification to the 2018 AWCON.

After a failed Olympic qualification campaign in 2015, they regrouped for the 2016 CECAFA Women’s Championship, where they got some impressive results.

They trashed Uganda and Burundi with the same 4-0 scoreline, whipped Zanzibar 11-0 and went past Ethiopia 3-2 before they were beaten 2-1 by Tanzania in the final.

In their first game in almost two years, they impressively beat Zambia 3-0 in March 2018 friendly game in Kitwe to show their readiness for the qualifying campaign of the 2018 AWCON.

They faced Uganda in the first game qualifying round of the 2018 AWCON and in their first game under Ouma- who in March 2018 replaced Richard Kanyi- a goal from left-back Lillian Adera was enough for them to win the first leg 1-0 in early April.

Away in Uganda for the second leg, the Harambee Starlets fought to get a goalless draw which took them to the next round of the qualification.

For the second qualifying round, Kenya will battle Equatorial Guinea in a two-leg tie, the last huddle to the 2018 AWCON in Ghana.
