AFC Leopards, Gor Mahia in financial crisis over stadium

"We are Suffering"

Nyayo National Stadium

AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia who enjoys a huge following in the Kenya Premier league have witnessed low revenue collections in all their matches that have been held outside the city.

According to Ingwe Chairman Dan Mule, the unavailability of Nyayo and Kasarani have affected their financially status.

“Having home games away from Nairobi doesn’t make sense at all. When we have our matches at Nyayo or Kasarani, the revenue from gate collections averages at about Sh700,000 but currently, we can hardly raise Sh300,000.” said Mule

Kasarani and Nyayo Stadium are currently under renovations a thing that has kept away all premier League teams from hosting their matches there.

On the other city stadium is not up to standards and therefore it does not have the threshold to host the Kenyan league.

Camp Toyoyo that serves as Gor Mahia training camp received the green light to host matches just the other day, where Homeboyz and Sofapaka were the first to test the soils.

The Ingwe Chairman added they are having their biggest headache with the Nairobi derby fast approaching, where they host Gor Mahia on May 7.

“We are looking at Machakos and Mumias but the cost implications are going to carry the day,” “We are focusing more on Machakos or even Thika since Mumias can barely host the two sets of fans. It will also be difficult for our fans to travel there. It will cost at least Sh3000 for a fan to make the trip to Mumias. For the team, he said, they will have to camp in Mumias for several days, which will also have cost implications,” said Mule.

Gor Mahia Chairman Ambrose Rachier also revealed that their fans are no longer interested in attending our matches due to huge costs.

“Fans are no longer motivated to attend matches due to the distances and costs they will have to cover.” Posed Rachier

AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia will be staging the famously known Mashemeji Derby next month.
