New developments in Governor Gakuru’s accident raise suspicion

The Nyeri Governor died after an early morning accident.

Kenyans on Tuesday morning woke up to news of the grisly accident that occurred along the Nyeri-Thika Highway. Gakuru died shortly after.

As Kenyans passed on their goodwill messages, there was little doubt that the Nyeri Governor had died from a normal accident.

However, new developments from Tuesday evening have caused confusion and fuelled speculation on exactly how Dr. Gakuru met his death.

Contradicting police Statement

Immediately after the accident, police were quick to issue a statement where they indicated that the accident involving the deceased governor’s official vehicle, was caused by a tyre burst.

However, the statement has been contradicted by the governor’s driver who indicated that he lost control of the vehicle while trying to avoid hitting a motorcycle rider.

Eye-witnesses at the scene had also corroborated the driver’s narration, raising doubts on how the police had arrived at their conclusion.

Suspicious eye-witness

Perhaps the most suspicious aspect in the entire story was a suspicious eye-witness who has since gone viral.

Dennis Muigai Ngengi appeared on an interview with a local television where he narrated vivid details on the deadly accident.

Ngengi’s presence at the scene has become an intriguing matter after it emerged that a person who closely resembled him had also appeared at a recent helicopter crash at Lake Nakuru National Park.

Ngengi, who claims to be a businessman, has since stated that the person in the Lake Nakuru accident was not him even though they shared the same name, same unique eye-wear, and shared a  name.

Contradicting eye-witness

Ngengi’s version of events that led and followed Gakuru’s accident have been contradicted by some of the locals who witnessed the accident.

For instance, Ngengi told Citizen TV that after the accident, he had talked to Governor Gakuru who looked fine but “complained that his leg was injured”, adding that the driver’s legs were stuck.

However, a woman who was interviewed by NTV recalled that the Governor had been badly injured and that the driver came out and attempted to move the governor who was unconscious.

Local Politics

A small incident that followed the accident has also served to fuel the already delicate situation.

A Facebook page identified as Nyeri Politics that had been spreading propaganda against the Governor was pulled down after Gakuru’s death.

The page had claimed that the Nyeri Governor had fallen out with powerful and wealthy financiers who had hoped he would retain the status quo at the Nyeri County.

A post from the controversial page had also alleged a poor working relationship between Gakuru and his deputy Mutahi Kahiga who was allegedly planning to become governor before the 2022 election.

Kahiga will be sworn in on Friday and will serve a full term expiring in 2022.
