Honorable Charity Ngilu is currently leading in the race to be Kitui’s first female governor having garnered 48 percent of the Kitui vote that has put her ahead of her opponents.

1.She is leading in the race for Kitui governor

Charity Ngilu is leading in the race to be Kitui’s first female governor going by the votes counted so far over her fiercest opponent David Musila who comes in second place as per the votes counted so far.

2.She was the first Kenyan woman to run for presidency

Honorable Charity Ngilu was the first Kenyan woman to run for presidency in 1997. Despite not winning the country’s top job, Ngilu definitely made her mark within the country’s political scene.

She came in fourth during the 1997 race.

3.She has been arrested before

Ngilu was arrested in 2007 for rescuing human rights activist Anne Njogu after she found police officers ‘beating and dragging Anne down the stairs’.

Ngilu was later on released from police custody after the court ruled that her arrest was illegal.

4.She was one of the main suspects in the Ksh 8 billion Karen land scandal

Charity Ngilu was, in 2015, charged with obstructing anti-corruption officials from investigating the Karen land scandal.

In its recommendation to the Director of Public Prosecutions, the EACC wanted Ngilu and eight other Ministry of Lands officials charged with various criminal offences for allegedly benefiting from the double allocation of the 134-acre land parcel in Karen valued at Sh8 billion.

Her name was however cleared in the scandal in March this year and the Ksh 1 million cash bail Ngilu had deposited to secure her freedom was refunded to her.
