Thirteen people have been killed and several others injured following a grisly road accident along Kisumu–Kericho Highway at Awasi, Kisumu County.

Reports indicate that the accident occurred after an Eldoret express bus collided head on with a trailer at Awasi. The bus was headed to Nairobi.

Those injured injured in the accident were rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital and Hope Medical Hospital. Bodies of the deceased have been moved to Ahero Hospital Mortuary.

According to Kisumu County Police Commander Benson Maweu, the accident happened at around 1:30am and by 2:30am they had counted at least 13 bodies.

"The bus was travelling from Kisumu towards Kericho on the Kisumu-Nairobi Highway when the driver tried to overtake a cane tractor and was involved in a head-on-collision with the trailer," said Maweu.
