JKIA terminal closed following night fire

Terminal 1C at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport has been temporarily closed following night fire caused by a baggage belt system malfunction.

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) on Thursday morning confirmed the incident which happened at 11pm on Wednesday night.

KAA stated that all passengers and staff at the terminal were evacuated safely and the fire contained by the airport’s fire team.

No injuries

Additionally, KAA said that no injuries were reported during the incident.

A statement from KAA stated: "We would like to confirm that at approximately 2344HRS last night, we had a fire incident at JKIA Terminal 1C’s Check-inn counters 7 and 8 caused by a baggage belt system malfunction."

The authority added: "Terminal 1C (T1C) has since been temporarily cordoned off and it’s flight operations moved to Terminal 1B."
