The family of blogger and activist Ndiangui Kinyagia has confirmed his presence and acknowledged his safety, ending days of uncertainty following his disappearance in late June.
According to an official statement issued on behalf of the family by lawyer Wahome Thuku, Kinyagia reached out to relatives on the evening of July 1, 2025 from an undisclosed location and reassured them that he was well, healthy and secure.
Reason for disappearance
He said he went into hiding once he learned that officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) were seeking him over unspecified criminal allegations.
On the advice of his legal team, Kinyagia presented himself before Justice Chacha Mwita of the High Court at Milimani Law Courts accompanied by his lawyers.

The family’s statement also recalled that DCI officers had entered Kinyagia’s residence in Kinoo, Kiambu County, during his absence and had carried away several electronic devices and personal documents.
The family reported the incident to Kinoo Police Station, but officers there, as well as at the nearby Kikuyu Police Station, denied holding or knowing the whereabouts of the blogger.
Protest timetable
Kinyagia, 35, first attracted national attention on June 19 when he shared details online of planned anti‑government protests scheduled for June 25, 2025, including a march to the State House and a moment of silence for those killed during last year’s finance bill demonstrations.

He was last seen at his home on June 21, shortly before individuals believed to be law enforcement personnel arrived in unmarked vehicles and conducted a raid without presenting a warrant.

Habeas corpus proceedings
On June 30, the High Court issued habeas corpus orders directing Inspector General Douglas Kanja and DCI Director Amin Mohammed to produce Kinyagia in court or explain his disappearance.
The DCI publicly denied detaining Kinyagia and called on him to surrender voluntarily.
Human rights concerns
Kinyagia’s case has taken place against a backdrop of mounting concern over enforced disappearances in Kenya.
Human rights organisations and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) have documented dozens of cases in which individuals were taken into custody during protests and have not been heard from since.
Civil society groups have urged the government to ensure accountability and to protect the rights of activists and citizens.
Supporters have rallied under #FreeNdianguiKinyagia, welcoming news of his safety while also urging that the legal process shed light on the grounds for the criminal allegations against him.
