Why Raila has called for an urgent meeting

This comes amid reports of panic within the ODM party

NASA leader Raila Odinga has called for an urgent meeting with Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leadership to discuss the future of the party.

The meeting will include joint ODM National Executive Committee, Parliamentary group and Governors who were elected through the Orange party ticket.

"Next week we will tell our members that there is no reason to panic. If anything, there are good things coming our way," ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna stated.

The leaders will also discuss disciplinary action that will be taken against Members of Parliament who have defied orders from Sifuna and vowed to support Deputy President William Ruto’s bid for presidency in 2022.

According to the Star, lack of details of the ‘Golden handshake’ between Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta has caused confusion in the ODM party, and members would like to know the former Prime Minister’s plans for 2022.

"For those who misunderstand the handshake, the ODM leadership has programmes in place that will see the party go to the election stronger than ever before," said ODM Treasurer Timothy Bosire.

“I don’t think there is anything to worry anyone, what we are seeing will fizzle out. Usually before campaigns for the next election start, there is such behavior by MPs who want handouts in order to be compromised,” Bosire added.

The NEC meeting is also likely to resolve that MPs who have shifted alliances be removed from parliamentary committees and replaced by party loyalists.

"Some of our members are not taking their work seriously. We are telling them that we are watching and those who will not live up to the expectations will be removed from committees," warned ODM Chairman John Mbadi.
