I also struggled with dyslexia, which was kind of a double-whammy. I was scared to go to school and be asked to read in front of the class; I would sit there with sweaty palms.

Then, in fifth grade, we had a running race out in the parking lot and they timed every kid in the schooland I had the fastest time of anybody. I was shocked, and realized this was something at which I could actually excel.

<h1> Looking back, I think that sports meant more to me than the next person. </h1>

I needed sports more to prove to myself that I could be good at something, and I worked a little harder than I think I would have if I hadnt been struggling.

Though that running race in the fifth grade was the beginning of my sports career, I never thought Id go to the Olympics. That was something that seemed like it would happen to somebody else, not me. But after being introduced to the decathlon by a track coach in college, eventually I was not just trying to be the best in my school, I was trying to be the best in the world.

By the time I was preparing for the 1976 Olympics, for the last six years of my athletic career, all I did was train for six to eight hours a day, driving myself to be the best I could be. I was extraordinarily dedicated, motivated, and competitive.

During my Olympic training, I was so far away from Caitlyn. I honestly just ignored my gender issues the best I could. But it was always present. When you suffer from gender dysphoria, its not something you can take two aspirin for, get plenty of sleep, wake up the next morning, and everythings fine. Youre just kind of stuck with it.

I didnt understand it, and I didnt know what was going on with me.

But it was also my dyslexia and gender issues that made me an Olympic champion. I channeled my struggles to drive and push me. Now, I see those issues as my gift.

<h1> Everybody has issues they have to deal with. </h1>

Whether thats family issues or identity issues or a learning disability, the quality of your life is going to be determined by how you deal with those obstacles. The key is to use it to push you forward.

I think everybody deserves an opportunity to compete in sports, no matter who you are, no matter what your identity. Sports is a great place for young people to get to know themselves, and to learn about winning, losing, hard work, and dedication.

While theres a lot of progress that needs to be made, I think the Olympics committee is way ahead of the rest of the sports world when it comes to trans athletes because theyve been grappling with hormone use issues in athlete for a long time that have forced them to develop clear policies for athletes.

Years after the 1976 Games, when I was competing, it was revealed that East Germany was illegally administering male hormones to female athletes as part of their training. Incidents like this have contributed to the need for hormonal testing among Olympic athletes, and the continual reevaluation of how hormone levels can affect fair competition.

The Olympics committee has also had to create policies around athletes using hormones for non-doping purposes, too. After a long battle with the IOC, <a href="https://www.espn.com/olympics/news/story?id=1835959" id="602cfbdb-cb79-3e47-ab1b-6e84ded10959"> American sailor Kevin Hall </a> , who had to take regular testosterone shots after being diagnosed with testicular cancer, was cleared to compete in the 2004 Athens Olympics with a therapeutic use exemption despite testosterone being a banned substance.

Over the last 15 to 20 years, the IOC has done a lot of research on these issues. I think theyve done just about as good of a job as you can do.

In the future, I think more sports organizations are going to have to find a way to accept trans athletes, too. We have certainly come a long way in the past 20 to 30 years, but we still have a ways to go.

<h1> There is an environment of machoism in some male sports that keeps athletes closeted because theyre afraid it will hurt their career. </h1>

That was certainly the case for me; living my life as a woman never even seemed like an option when I was a young person.

In 1977, the year after I competed and retired, I got to meet tennis player Renee Richards, whod come out as transgender. I never told her about any of my issues, but I thought, What guts she had to do this, to live her life authentically, and I admired her so much.

That being said, I think every athlete has to contemplate coming out on an individual basisevery situation is different and every individual has to do whats best for them.

When I was young, I felt I couldnt do anything about my gender dysphoria. Back then, I could never have envisioned a future for myself as happy as I am now.

<h1> I have no regrets about my life. </h1>

I was fortunate to have six genetic children and four stepchildren. I also had wonderful women in my life. I spent the majority of my life raising children and working, and I have no regrets about that.

But I never thought that someday I would be able to live my life authentically, I thought Id just have to deal with my identity my whole life.

It wasnt until I was 63 years old looking back and realizing I was dealing with the same issues I had when I was 9 that I wondered, What am I going to do with my life? I finally got the guts to tell my story. It wasnt an easy decision, and it took a long time.

No matter your situation, theres no right or wrong way to come out. But now, I wake up in the morning, and I look in the mirror, and everything finally feels like its in the right place. Im not struggling anymore. Im happy.

Depsite J.Lo's Golden Globe and 2020 Film Independent Spirit Awards nominations (not to mention that <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/a30716503/jennifer-lopez-workout-super-bowl-halftime-show/" id="cb5b28cd-e6f8-3b34-aa5c-a8b0c36abe63"> Super Bowl performance </a> last week), both Jennifer and the film 'Hustlers' were completely snubbed by the Academy Awards this year.

Jennifer did attend the Independent Spirit Awards in Los Angeles just last night, so it's possible she'll still make it to some of the Oscars after-parties this year. (If so, I've got my fingers crossed for a fierce outfit.)

Neither J.Lo nor her fiance Alex Rodriguez's social media accounts are offering up any clues as to where they might be. A.Rod posted an Instagram Story with his daughter Tashi today, while Jennifer was still dedicating her Stories to the aftermath of her Super Bowl performance. Some speculated that her Super Bowl performance was, in fact, J.Lo's response to her Oscars snub. The singer memorably took the stage on a pole to recreate her epic pole-dancing performance from Hustlers.

Aside from that Jennifer has been mostly tight-lipped regarding the snub.

The song, written by Diane Warren, was featured in Chrissy Metz's film Breakthrough, the real-life story of a mother who turned to her Christian faith after her son fell through a frozen lake.

But apparently the Warren-Chrissy collaboration almost didn't come through. The songwriter gave a pre-show interview to E! News in which she revealed she initially didn't want Chrissy to perform the song, according to <a href="https://people.com/movies/oscars-2020-diane-warren-didnt-want-chrissy-metz-song/" id="70c5c3a2-2808-3155-a161-fac3025a0844"> People </a> . (FYI, this is Warren's 11th Oscar nominationand she's never won!)

Chrissy's been candid about struggling with her weight over the years:

I was blown away. I didnt want her originally for the song, I wanted a more established artist, I didnt realize she could sing, Warren said. She went in my studio, I said, Alright, Ill come back in a few hours. And when I heard her on the song, [I was just] blown away. Just totally blown away. She was amazing.

Needless to say Chrissy is pretty pumped about her performance. That's why I was so excited to hear that Google Assistant is rolling out Interpreter Mode on Android and iOS phones worldwide (it originally rolled out only on the <a href="https://www.walmart.com/ip/Google-Nest-Hub-Max-Charcoal/842552117?irgwc=1&amp;sourceid=imp_Si51xqxZDxyOUGjwUx0Mo38SUknyFOymqWYUxg0&amp;veh=aff&amp;wmlspartner=imp_10078&amp;clickid=Si51xqxZDxyOUGjwUx0Mo38SUknyFOymqWYUxg0" id="b0ee33ea-d610-3a7c-a830-4e1918f2271c"> Google Home Hub </a> ). The new real-time translation feature allows you to converse in 44 different languages with the press of a button. It's basically Google Translate 2.0without the lag time required to pull up an app or type in a website.

The execution is simple: Just say, "Hey Google, help me speak Vietnamese," or "Hey Google, be my French translator" to engage in a fully translated conversation via your phone. (You can also type into the tool, if say, you're trying to borrow a tampon from a stranger in the ladies room, and would prefer not to converse in loud robot-speak.)

When I used a <a href="https://www.walmart.com/browse/google-pixel-4/1105910_3169677" id="9193f70f-b5b6-3a80-a753-9c54c6b156a9"> Google Pixel 4 </a> to test Interpreter Mode with a German-speaker, the functionality was smooth, and the translation nearly perfect. I liked that it provided me with both an audio and written translationa tool that I imagine would be useful if you were attempting to learn a new language as well.

Other new features rolling out include the ability to hold your phone over a sign or menu, and view a translation that you can screenshot via Google Lens.

Google Maps will also now feature a "translate" button that allows you to tell a local taxi driver the name of your destination in their native language (no more futilely attempting to point to the map on your phone while miming that you'd like to be dropped off near the pyramid at the Louvre).

I'm just going to say it: Google Assistant's Interpreter Mode is the best thing to happen to travel since the smartphone.

During a recent trip to Southeast Asia, my husband and I would have been quite literally lost (many times over) without the help of Google Translate. Most memorably, the app helped us communicate with an elderly Vietnamese couple who welcomed us into their home during a tour. It enabled a conversation so fluid the couple wound up offering us glasses of their own home-brewed (garlic-flavored!!) whiskey, and insisting we all take a photo together before we left.

The ability to transform her body at the gym is a new experience for Ariel. Years ago, it was hard because Id go to the gym with my trainer and because of <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/a27102758/ariel-winter-weight-loss-anti-depressant-medication-instagram/" id="fd4f5f38-f86e-3ff2-abad-4415ffdeba11"> my antidepressant medications </a> I never saw results, she says.

Eventually, she decided to switch medicationsbut not for aesthetic reasons. I didnt change my antidepressants because I wanted to lose weight, Id just accepted it and it was fine, she says. I got inspired to actually find a medication that helped me as a person and did all the things I wanted it to do.

When she found a combination that worked for her, Ariel says it felt like it turned back on my metabolism. She admits the weight loss she experienced wasnt something she even worked for, saying it came with medications and happened really quickly.

Yet, it made an undeniable difference in Ariels outlook. When I changed meds, and started feeling better about myself mentally, losing weight was helpful because it made me feel like I wasnt just stuck. I hate being stuck anywhere in life.

The upside wasnt even necessarily her slimmer new frameIve always had curves and I like having curves, she saysbut her ability to finally see more visible results in the gym. Seeing her body changed helped her unearth her workout motivation again, and now she works out three times a week.

Her sweat sessions consist primarily of <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/a29504467/ariel-winter-bear-plank-workout-instagram/" id="094e15a1-a756-36ef-a1a0-c9593ba80435"> strength training </a> . Ill do cardio occasionally but Im not looking to lose any more weight, Im looking to gain muscle, she says. I dont weigh myself, I don't care about that.

Ariels not a dieter, eitherin fact, she loves pizza, carbs, and a good cheese platebut shes trying to make a concerted effort to eat healthier. I know eating a ton of cheese, bread, greasy food isnt great for my heart or my insides so Im working on that, she says. These days shes focused on making small changes (think: turkey burgers instead of ground beef) and upping her meal prep game. Im trying to make more foods that will last me throughout the week, she says.

Ariels recent weight fluctuations have made her the target of plenty of cruelty on social media. I think the one thing that bugs me the most is when people say Oh thank god she lost weight, she used to be so fat, she says.

While she used to <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/life/a19902058/ariel-winter-shut-down-body-shamers-who-said-she-squeezed-into-shorts/" id="fcb6a9ae-93ca-3456-ac71-bc282e4e6058"> fire back in the comments </a> of her Instagram posts, she changed gears after a fan pointed out that she spent more time responding to negative comments than nice ones. Its hard not to because Im a feisty person, nobody likes being treated that way, she says.

But shes committed to focusing on only what makes her happyand that includes continuing to crush her workouts in the gym. Im doing something for myself that Im seeing positive results from, and that makes me feel stronger and better, she says. Im feeling more energized and healthier, and its inspiring me to do new things.

Sophie Turner accompanied new husband Joe Jonas to the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards on Monday. Eventually, Gypsy figured out her health issues were all a lie, and ran away with boyfriend Nick Godejohn. Gypsy reportedly went on to convince Godejohn to murder Dee Dee-and he stabbed her to death in June 2015.

<h1> Wait, so what's Gypsy Rose's boyfriend's prison sentence? </h1>

Godejohn, who is now 29 years old, was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Dee Dee Blanchard in February 2019, according to the <a href="https://www.news-leader.com/story/news/crime/2019/02/22/nicholas-godejohn-sentenced-life-prison-blanchard-murder/2949249002/" id="84b8dc73-f845-3036-aef4-a73ad0207fec"> Springfield News-Leader </a> . Prosecutors did not pursue the death penalty in the case. During the trial, Godejohn's defense team tried to argue that he committed the crime out of love, to save Gypsy from her mother's abuse.

During the sentencing hearing, the <a href="https://www.news-leader.com/story/news/crime/2019/02/22/nicholas-godejohn-sentenced-life-prison-blanchard-murder/2949249002/" id="84b8dc73-f845-3036-aef4-a73ad0207fec"> Springfield News-Leader </a> reports that Godejohn told the judge, "I was blindly in love. That was always very much the case."

In comparison, Gypsy is <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/life/a26949387/how-long-is-gypsy-rose-blanchard-in-prison-when-is-her-release-date/" id="b5739682-81f6-37d9-a493-06d5f957b858"> serving a 10-year sentence </a> for her role in the murder (she convinced Godejohn to do it, after all), and she will be eligible for parole in 2023 when she is 32 years old.

What Is Gypsy Rose Lee's Boyfriend's Sentence?

If you're obsessed with Hulu's new show The Act, you probably know all about Gypsy Rose Lee's <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/life/a26949387/how-long-is-gypsy-rose-blanchard-in-prison-when-is-her-release-date/" id="34ed808b-9b3b-3ba4-af78-36392ba15c1a"> real-life prison sentence </a> for the role she played in the murder of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. "I have #multiplesclerosis," she wrote. I am disabled. I fall sometimes. I drop things. My memory is foggy. And my left side is asking for directions from a broken gps. But we are doing it. And I laugh and I dont know exactly what I will do precisely but I will do my best.

Since then, Selma's been open about her struggles with the disease on Instagram, sharing photos of herself <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/a25692652/selma-blair-multiple-sclerosis-cane/" id="a20ae23f-1fb0-391e-a826-807b0131fc40"> walking with a cane </a> and posting about the " <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/a25889156/selma-blair-ms-anxiety/" id="e7f14caa-c92d-3545-ab24-76e68a9772b4"> uncontrollable anxiety </a> " that she suffers due to the disease.

Multiple sclerosis is a disease of the central nervous system that affects the way information flows between the brain and the body, according to the <a href="https://www.nationalmssociety.org/What-is-MS" id="1df17fda-3395-3b0b-a585-5d10d83510a8"> National MS Society </a> . Common symptoms include difficulty walking, fatigue, numbness or tingling, weakness, pain, and depression.

Selma's preparation for the Oscars involved more than just her own hair and makeup-her cane got a makeover, too. She credited manicurist Tom Bachik for customizing her cane with her monogram and a pink diamond. "I wanted a special cane for #vanityfair dinner," she wrote. She said producer David Lyons found her some patent leather for her cane as well. "I burst into tears. These gifts to get me through," she wrote on Instagram. "There are angels. "
