<h1>A lot of people have always had doubts about the artistic ability of</h1>

It’s happened, and everyone has quickly moved to solo careers, displaying what they brought to the table, to create Psquare and what made them so great in the first place. Mr P, with his media-friendly mien, great looks and the ability to spin a good story, appeared to be ahead in the game already. Even before he dropped his first record, everyone rooted for who essentially was the flashier half of Psquare.

Peter Okoye’s shine hasn’t diminished, but it’s starting to look a bit superficial. Just take a look at his solo recording discography, and you find samples from American music mixing with a dose of Nigerian originality to create hybrid records. The man has released three records, ‘, and ‘The numbers look good on them too, with the first two running into millions, and the most recent one almost at the 300,000 mark in just three days. Business is sure looking good.

But delve into the records, and you find the samples and bites off old American records simply staring you in the face.

‘Cool it down’, which is his first official release, has a sample. It takes the lines: “I say, take me there, I wanna go there, take me there, Let’s go there, take me to that great place of wonders and wayshens,” from Mya’s 1999 single, <a href="" id="06f22750-4bf5-5717-ab3b-9808bf8b7e87">‘Take me there’, </a>one of our old-time favourites which features Maze, and Blinky Blink, and was a soundtrack for The Rugrats Movie’.

Up next is ‘My way’, a record which samples its instrumentals from Mario Winans’ ‘, a 2003 song co-which features Diddy, and co-produced by Fugees. The single was a huge success worldwide, reaching #2 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and #1 in the UK Top 40. It remains Winan’s only commercial hit single to date.

The video for ‘My way’, has Peter condemned to a desert by a jilted lover. It conceptually borrows from Chris Brown’s ‘visuals. Peter Okoye has always had his key influences from the 90s and early 2000’s R&amp;B singers. From his dance patterns to his songcraft, he constantly infuses elements of other materials from this era into his craft.

This was a core part of early Psquare, where they remade entire records to score hits. But time and the evolution of Nigerian pop music has ensured that they have had to tweak their craft. But with the split, Peter seems to have fallen back on old techniques to create future records.

Admittedly, these are his early days. Mr P, as a solo artist is still less than a year old, relying not on the strength of his artistry, but the fanbase which Psquare built over the years. He simply needs to grow himself fast, tweak his artistry and push his boundaries. Perhaps, we might have less of these records in the future. Everything else is there; the ability to pull a good dance move, the looks, and the goodwill. He needs to get the creative process right and surround himself with people who can mine depths of creativity to craft records.

The main concern here is the limit on the window he has to impress and score his hits early. None of his records so far have created a dent in the scene. While much of the attention he has got has been from his media rounds, and the novel feeling of curiosity from fans who are still working on adjusting to him as a solo artist. But that can’t power him forever. He needs to actively provide them with great music to justify the followership on his solo journey.

For now, his originality is being called into question. How does he respond? Time will tell.

But sometimes, Gold isn’t always gold, and the shiniest things are just, well, shiny.

Mr P’s solo career so far is an imitation of old R&B American singers

<h1>South African all-male choir Ladysmith Black Mambazo, have won the Grammys for the fifth time with an anniversary album.</h1>

Ladysmith Black Mambazo first came to worldwide attention when Paul Simon enlisted the group for his 1986 album “Graceland,” a landmark work of world music fusion which revived the folk icon’s career and won the most prestigious Grammy for Album of the Year.

“Shaka Zulu,” one of their major breakthrough projects came the following year. In 2017, the group decided to re-record the “Shaka Zulu” album in tribute to the group’s founder Joseph Shabalala, who has retired and handed control to his four sons.

The sons said that the latest album, with younger singers on the same tunes, was also meant to honor earlier members of the sprawling ensemble who have since died.

Shabalala, 76, was raised in the apartheid era on a white farm in KwaZulu-Natal province. He began singing after being inspired by dreams which eventually took on Christian themes.

As he retired from recording, Shabalala created a foundation to promote isicathamiya singing to children.

The Recording Academy, which administers the top prizes in US music, has long showered love on Ladysmith Black Mambazo, which has been nominated 19 times. The group was also nominated Sunday for Children’s Album but did not win.

The ensemble took the Best World Music Album award for “Shaka Zulu Revisited: 30th Anniversary Collection.

South African band Ladysmith Black Mambazo wins it for the 5th time

The Nigerian dancehall act featured alongside Stonebwoy, Chubb Rock, Stylo G, Bunji Garlin, Dre Zion &amp; Jaheil on Morgan Heritage’s new “Avrekedabra” album.

“Avrekedabra” was nominated for the Best Reggae album award coming up against “” by Chronixx, “” by Common Kings, “” by J Boog and “” by Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley.

It lost, the category was won by the album “” by Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley.

If the album had won in its category at the 60th Grammy Awards which held on January 28, 2018, Timaya would have been the first Nigerian-based act with a Grammy.

'Location' is the debut single by American singer Khalid. It was released on February 19, 2017, by Right Hand Music Group and RCA Records as the lead single from his debut studio album American Teen. The track was produced by Syk Sense, Tunji Ige, and Chris McClenney. The song has since gone Platinum.

Timaya has failed to win a Grammy Award, after losing out in his category.

Africa’s hottest rapper, Cassper Nyovest, agrees with M.I Abaga that the Hip-hop movement of South Africa is leading the continent.

The rapper, <a href="http://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/music/cassper-nyovest-interview-m-i-abaga-filling-stadiums-id7852772.html" id="b2b338d5-0594-5bee-8b45-e1699a2053ee">in an interview with Pulse,</a> states that M.I Abaga who in 2017, called for local rappers to make more ‘Hip-hop’ music via his controversial ‘You rappers should fix up your life’, is right.

“Yes, South African Hip-hop is in the forefront of African Hip-hop in general. It might not be as popular as it is in South Africa in Nigeria. But I know for a fact that the rappers from Nigeria are kinda unknown in SA,” he says. “If we talk about crossing over, I know that a lot of people in Nigeria know about my music. I know that in Kenya and Ghana it’s the same thing.

“I’m not just talking about me, I’m talking about the movement.  is big in Ghana, but are there other rappers who are as big as Sarkodie from Ghana? The South African Hip-hop movement is big across, also in London, New York…we are out there performing in different countries.”

Cassper admits that this topic is controversial. But believes that this is the truth.

“Me saying that might offend people here. They might feel that I’m taking shots at Nigerian music. But that’s not the deal. If we are to discuss in terms of numbers and appeal across the world, it’s just the way it is.”

On Making 'Strict Hip-hop'

On M.I Abaga’s call to Nigerian rappers to infuse more rap into their music, Cassper disagrees in part but also agrees to certain aspects of the song.

“If I decide to rap on a beat like Davido’s ‘Fall’, which is more like Afro-pop, is it not Hip-hop? I don’t know, I’m not the one who came up with a set of rules. For me, it’s still Hip-hop because it is a rapper. I can decide to rap on anything. I just use it as a beat and rap on it. It doesn’t have to be a certain kind of beat.

“At the end of the day, it’s each to his own. If M.I feels like that’s his opinion, that’s his opinion. For me, anyone can rap in any language that is dope. If you say it’s Hip-hop, then it is Hip-hop.”

I ask him about the popular trend in Nigeria where rappers tweak their artistry to become singers. Cassper says “It’s none of my business.” Although, he also shares an important point: “I don’t think rappers must not sing. If you want to sing, you could sing. But if you are a rapper, we still need to hear you rap. You can’t sing all the time. We have to hear you rap because you need to rap for us to call you a rapper. If you sing all the time that means you are a singer now.”

On his 10 million album units claim

In December 2017, <a href="http://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/music/cassper-nyovest-has-sold-10-million-albums-id7715186.html" id="6119caf8-c37e-597c-8804-6f9bfeb94daa">Nyovest received certifications </a>from the Recording Industry of South Africa (RISA) for selling over 10 million album equivalents. This figure includes streams, digital and physical downloads, caller ringback tunes and everything else he had sold since he first dropped a record.

‘M.I Abaga is right, South African Hip-hop is leading in Africa', rapper says

Since 2007, Mr. Okoth served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK).  With Mr. Okoth at its helm, MCSK has grown from barely 600 members in 2007 to over 10,000 to date with numerous of its members earning millions of Kenya shillings in royalties. MCSK has a deal with local artist to licence music in Kenya to telecommunication companies.

In 2014, According to local media sources in Kenya, Maurice Okoth Maurice Okoth and two other employees of MCSK were suspended over corruption claims at the society and in the handling of artists’ monies. This comes after <a href="http://www.hapakenya.com/2016/01/13/elani-puts-mcsk-on-the-spot-over-unpaid-royalties-poor-accountability/" id="11d569a5-edd4-5b99-b7d5-c1c7050c722e">Elani</a>, a kenyan band released an online video questioning the credibility of the body.

That was followed up by more artists like Avril, Pitson among others claiming that the royalties paid did not add up despite having hit songs and lots of airplay.

In 2015, he was charged to court, but the case was dismissed in September 2016. Maurice Okoth was cleared of all charges.

“I’m so relieved! When something like this happens you lose your confidence. I couldn’t even give advice to people or stand up to talk to them because it really affected my life. It took my confidence, my leadership ability and guidance capabilities. But I’m thankful to God because I’ve been surrounded by supportive friends and family,” Okoth told local media publication, Showbuzz.

According to sources, Maurice Okoth has held meetings with COSON in a possible deal that will enable the body digitally licence music in Kenya for Nigerian artists. Pulse received a tip-off that officials of COSON were invited by Okoth to Nairobi, in September 2017, where they had a meeting to structure the deal.

It’s the 21 album for Wenger &amp; The Little Technicians who are seeking to enjoy commercial and critical success again, after their negative reception of their last outing.

21 years is a long time for any band to be together, and although they have had moments of success together, and one classic album in 2004 titled “The Invincibles,” they are currently seen as a band who are past their prime, retaining their core fan base, but never doing enough to top the charts.

With new project "We Are The Arsenal", Wenger and his band provide a masterclass in heartbreak tunes, sad ballads and failed attempts to fly.

Hit tracks such as ‘Always Fourth’, and ‘Europa Nights’ possess a familiar tale of woe. But you could find reassurance and a little brightness seeping through on ‘Contracts.’ ‘I Sead It’ is a bulldozing, experimental muscular piece, while ‘Waiting For Alexis’, with its ups and downs is a hair-pulling, jigsaw of sounds, throwing you into unnerving territory. Frankly, you just want the song to end, so you could be done and over it.

The slow jam "Let me assist you" has bass guitarist, Ozil in his element, as he strums his instrument, and dictates the pace of the project, a rare light in the production. Although he is out of place and out of tune on “Big Nights,” another song with a pop promise. The music is always great, but it ultimately frustrates in its inconsistent theme, bringing whelming unhappiness and regret to all who sign up for a listen.

In the end, you the listener, would ask yourself, “What am I truly getting from this project? Is it worth my time and my money? Should I move on to the new school rock stars?

The answer is personal. Only you can make the decision.

Wenger & The Little Technicians – “We Are The Arsenal”

In 2014, Wizkid released what is regarded critically as a let-down album. Although “Ayo (Joy)” was commercially successful, but critic and fans weren’t exactly gracious. Too many dance records and filler tracks made many blast the work from end to end.

So when he announced “Sounds from the Other Side” project in 2015, fans were cautious but optimistic. Described by Wizkid as a project in which he attempts to “fuse the sound with artists from right here (USA), with my local producers back home,” it was difficult to know what to expect from the release.

Wizkid has grown from his last project. He is operating on a bigger project, and catering to global audiences now. He has a record deal with Sony Music Entertainment which requires him to outgrow the confines of African music and take on an inclusive fan base.

After multiple delays, Starboy’s “Sounds from the Other Side” is finally here, and it’s safe to say there’s a new direction on this project. At 10 tracks, the project is concise and it shows a coherent vibe, when compared to its predecessor.

After tweaking his sound with Caribbean dance records and singles, Wizzy  goes all out on “Sounds from the Other Side.” With songs like ‘African Bad gyal’ and ‘Come closer’, he also introduces elements of the Nigerian sound to U.S. crowds.

At 40-minutes long, “Sounds from the Other Side” is surprisingly cohesive. Through the mixtape’s 10 tracks, Wizkid weaves in and out of Afrobeat, EDM, R&amp;B, House and dancehall. If the singer’s next album is anything like his mixtape, he may finally have another “Superstar” under his belt. Check out the three best songs from “Sounds from the Other Side” below.

A solo run, Wizkid takes on Afrobeat, blending it with a faint Latino flavour to bring home one of the most ‘popping’ ode to the African woman. He flows in English and pidgin, delivering a record that hits you slowly, with each extra listen unwrapping a renewed feeling of appreciation.

Wizkid relationship with House music has been a fruitful one, with 2014’s ‘In my bed’ smashing commercial acceptance across the continent. He returns this time with a richer record featuring South African R&amp;B and House singer Bucie. Over repetitive instrumentals and drums, he duets with her to create a record that is satisfying with every bounce.

“African Bad Gyal” ft Chris Brown

If you lack energy and dance moves, avoid this track. It’s a storm, carefully curated and packaged as an audio file. Produced by Sarz, Wizkid and Chris Brown provides dance parties across the globe with a record that will be a DJ’s secret weapon. There’s verve in the beats, beauty in the lyrics, and fire in its soul.

The reason why Kiss Daniel and his label mate Sugarboy do not participate in collaborations with other artists have been revealed.

Kiss Daniel and Sugarboy who are signed to G-Worldwide Entertainment have never been guests on any song outside the record label.

The situation, which is a rare in the Nigerian music industry, has been questioned by fans, music enthusiasts, the media, and music industry experts.

But there’s a new and official explanation for it. In a statement released to Pulse, CEO of G-Worldwide Entertainment, Festus Ehimare also known as Emperor Geezy, has disclosed his reason for taking this strategy.

According to Geezy, the no-collaboration policy is a business decision designed to benefit his company and his signed artists.

“I have listened to, read and watched various on-air personalities, entertainment journalists and the odd industry professional voice their concerns on the “refusal” of G-Worldwide to allow artistes on its roster collaborate with, or feature other artistes outside the fold on their music.
