This is especially true now that so many celebs are exercising at home via digital workouts, which are way less expensive than sessions with a private trainer. So, I decided to shoot my shot and try working out like Tracee for a week. This meant signing up for a free, two-week trial of the <a href="https://tracyanderson.com/" id="c7d778e9-24eb-34b3-a9a3-c09f222c7aec"> Tracy Anderson Method </a> .

Tracees been consistently <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/g29993791/tracee-ellis-ross-health-fitness-tips/" id="2df89b59-f13a-35e4-a192-c7c673e6ecd5"> taking TA Method classes </a> for over five years now. Every week, Anderson introduces one new routine for each fitness levelbeginner, intermediate, and advancedand suggests that you do whichever one you choose four to seven times. (Yes, you can <a href="http://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/a32730610/working-out-everyday/" id="402b9603-b054-3465-a001-e3ed6e5df38a"> work out every day </a> if youre smart about it.) The following week, its a whole new routine, and Anderson prides herself on not repeating her sequences, so you never know what to expect. "I love the workouts and have been doing it for years," Tracee <a href="https://www.instagram.com/tv/B-nphDulKt1/?utm_source=ig_embed" id="7229d2cc-2856-3312-a4c4-a9603bc2dc0c"> wrote in a caption </a> of herself taking one of Anderson's at-home workouts. "It keeps me strong and long with a little jiggle. Just like I like!"

<h1> I thought I knew what I was in for, but I was wrong. </h1>

Personally, Ive done so. many. reps. of squats, leg lifts, and biceps curls over the last several months in quarantine that my body was craving a new get-fit routine. My workout plan seemed simplein theory. I decided to do the intermediate class three times a week since <a href="https://www.prevention.com/fitness/a23587859/tracee-ellis-ross-workouts/" id="6dab329b-d32c-37f3-abdd-a54efe100380"> Tracee has previously said </a> that she exercises three to four times per weeknormally twice on the weekends and at least once on a weekday morning...at 6 a.m.

As a fellow early riser, I felt good about this. I decided to start on a Thursday since its when Anderson drops new workouts. I grabbed a pair of <a href="http://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/g29367992/best-dumbbells/" id="07b78301-f561-3964-a536-f84b21db3b76"> 3-pound dumbbells </a> (because her classes focus on <a href="http://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/a29135601/heavy-or-light-weights-workout/" id="36fe6b69-a77a-3521-a000-1d560a392992"> light weights/high reps </a> ), my <a href="http://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/g32756700/ankle-weights/" id="d9aedf68-d586-3598-a92f-63c89e452522"> ankle weights </a> , and a <a href="http://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/g32320107/thick-yoga-mat/" id="1a34fe67-22b9-3285-a869-d82473f483c4"> thicker workout mat </a> because I knew wed be spending lots of time on the floor based on everything Id gleaned from <a href="https://www.instagram.com/traceeellisross/channel/" id="03bbea76-0673-3707-a135-3b8e150f0f2c"> Tracees gram </a> .

Every workout starts off the same way: a quick warm-up followed by a standing arm series with weights. Since Ive been taking classes in New York City that begin much the same way (so many boutique fitness instructors got their starts at Andersons studio that tinges of her method pop up in pretty much every sculpt class), I felt confident that I knew what I was in for. Wrong!

It became very clear almost immediately that my delts wouldnt be able to just dial it in. I started having a flashback to <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/B-nphDulKt1/" id="e9819df8-f3c1-3bfa-ab0e-fa356599d362"> this video Tracee posted </a> specifically, that look that says Help me! at about the five-second mark.

It wasnt so much the moves themselves, which consisted of standard exercises like raises, presses, and triceps kickbacksit was how long youre asked to suspend your limbs in the air. I began to question whether or not being able to actually feel my arms was a sensation I needed.

<h1> I discovered butt muscles I never knew existed. </h1>

This is a great time to explain that the TA Method is designed to work your muscles to the point of exhaustion in order to increase their endurance. Anderson drives this message home by picking workout playlists with songs that each last about as long as Bohemian Rhapsody. We didnt stop moving our arms for two full tracks, and by the end, those light weights felt like lifting boulders and I'd lost track of reps entirely; I was so far in the zone.

But before I had a chance to mourn too much for my triceps, I had to hurry up and put on my ankle weights to start the leg portion of the class because Anderson (who breaks her workouts into three main partsarms, lower body, abs) transitions between these sections faster than a triathlete trying to win a race. I barely got my velcro to stick before the first lower-body sequence began.

In an effort to fully embrace my week of working out like Tracee, I decided to video tape myself doing it ... I want to start by saying that Tracee makes shooting yourself working out seem super easy, IDK, maybe because shes an actress and TV producer IRL. I spent almost as long trying to figure out where to put my phone as I did picking out an outfit that I thought was worthy of her activewear flex. Now, roll the tape!

That's mere moments of the 60 minutes I spent sweating like Tracee. If Id sped it up, you would have seen me lift and swing and kick my legs in ways I didn't think were possible. Anderson introduced me to muscles in my butt that I never knew existed, and Im a certified trainer. Its one thing to understand human anatomy...its quite another to feel every inch of it due to <a href="http://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/a32005309/why-do-muscles-get-sore/" id="c4459a5a-8386-30d4-a793-8b27b9f32586"> delayed onset muscle soreness </a> .

<h1> Yet I couldn't stop coming back for more... </h1>

As I did the workout again...and again, over the coming days, my mood oscillated between feeling masochistic and incredible. After a week of asking my body to move in ways it never had before, I began to understand why Tracee could shake her head and shout, She crazy! She crazy! at Anderson on her TV screen ( <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/B_LXCmHFaCf/" id="fda68133-ae80-302b-a4f8-f29a71b101ae"> check timestamp 30 seconds for the receipts </a> ), but keep coming back for more.

Its the same reason I decided to start paying for a $90 monthly subscription after my 14-day free trial finished. There is, after all, a method to her madness.

But if you find yourself wondering, "What is HIIT?" as in, what is an actual HIIT workout like, these pro tips from certified trainers who specialize in teaching the technique will help you crush your first class.

The first thing you should know is that a HIIT workout is designed to push you to your limits. The aim of this type of training is to get you to perform <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/a28580187/amrap-meaning/" link="null" rel="noopener noreferrer"> as many reps as possible </a> of each exercise at max effort for a very short period of time, typically 2030 seconds, rest briefly, and then continue on to the next move with minimal breaks in between. Phew.

That means you can continue burning extra calories up to 48 hours after your HIIT workout ends.

Another benefit of HIIT, which Steve Uria, certified trainer and founder of the HIIT-based fitness studio <a href="https://www.switchplaygroundusa.com/" link="null" rel="noopener noreferrer"> Switch Playground </a> , calls the beauty of high-intensity interval training, is that it can help boost your metabolic rate. " You will lose body fat, as well as put on lean muscle ," he explains. That combo can help you burn more calories throughout the day.

<h2>Okay, but before you HIIT it, master these basic moves</h2>

There are a few standard body weight exercises, which Tamir calls primary movements, that both he and Uria say you'll find in pretty much any HIIT class the squat, hinge, and pushup.

"The reason that all of these are important is because most of the more complex or more functional movements in a HIIT class are built on these fundamentals," Uria explains. He suggests scheduling some 1:1 time with a certified trainer who can break them down for you and make sure you're form is A+ before signing up for a class.

<h2>Speaking of classes, forget about "Going Big" off the bat</h2>

Starting small (in terms of class size) is your best bet as a beginner. The benefit of signing up for HIIT workouts where the trainer-to-student ratio is low is that you get more feedback about your form and can ensure you're doing moves correctly in order to advance faster and not injure yourself.

For example, at Switch, there are several trainers per class so that they can keep an eye on all the clients and give more personal attention while the instructor leads the workout.

But more often than not, there will only be one trainer in the room with you. To ensure you're not getting lost in the crowd, Tamir has a good tip: "One thing I would also suggest somebody that's new do is to call the gym or studio and ask them how big their classes are," he suggests.

While you have them on the phone, you can also pepper them with a few other questions that can help you prepare for their particular type of HIIT workout. "Ask them what to expect from a HIIT workout with them. Are they, do you do a warm-up? Like what does the warm up consist of? How long is the actual session? How long is the cool down?" He also recommends reading reviews. "I really suggest doing that, and also letting the instructor know that you're new so they can keep an eye out for you."

<h2>Oh, and don't be afraid to dial down the intensity initially</h2>

This might sound obvious, but it's worth stating outright because one of the biggest risks with HIIT workouts is injuries sustained from <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/a27562920/signs-of-overtraining-recovery/" link="null" rel="noopener noreferrer"> overtraining </a> . "Go at your own pace," Tamir advises. "This is also if you feel intimidated; don't try to keep up with others, just focus on you. You can increase the intensity as you get more comfortable with things."

He says one way to not get caught up in how many burpees the person next to you is doing is by setting in an intention before class. "Ask yourself: 'What's the reason why I'm here? To increase my endurance. Because I have a lot of stress and I want to release it. Because I want to lose weight. Just to become a better you.' Whatever your goal is, think about that."

<h2>Even if you take it slow, prepare to be sore, especially in the beginning</h2>

Anyone who's new to HIIT should familiarize themselves with another acronym: DOMS. It stands for delayed onset muscle soreness. " It can take about 48 hours for your muscles to recover properly after a HIIT workout ," Uria says. That also happens to be about how long he and Tamir both recommend waiting in between HIIT classes when you're new to the training style.
