<p>While face masks were not initially a part of <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/a31229708/how-to-prepare-for-coronavirus/" id="46e2be19-9270-3855-a381-57ed752a8f3e">  COVID-19 prevention strategies </a> , experts now believe they could play a role in <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/a32032755/diy-fabric-masks-novel-coronavirus/" id="b686e769-5db9-3888-a28b-e96227d8156d">  reducing disease transmission </a> by preventing <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/a31646078/coronavirus-infect-people-without-symptoms/" id="4908c9e9-25db-3ae0-a498-c5d022b2d5d0">  asymptomatic carriers </a> from spreading the disease, discouraging people from touching their faces, and reminding people to continue to practice social distancing and hand hygiene.</p>

<p>If you don't have a fabric mask on hand, you might be wondering if a bandana or scarf will suffice. The answer: Yes, but there are a few caveats. (ICYWW, there's also a <a href="https://www.etsy.com/market/face_mask" id="d06bcfa7-8d42-3b81-a046-6dad05c47685">  cottage industry of fabric face masks </a> on Etsy, and patterns for face masks appearing all over social media right now.)</p>

<h1> The thicker the fabric, the better the face mask.  </h1>

<p>Though Dr. Shan Soe-Lin, PhD, has a collection of fabric face masks that she keeps in rotation, she has also used a large, thick shawl in a pinch. If you have a choice between a scarf and a bandana you should use a scarf, she says. </p>

<p>Then, you should wrap it around your face a couple of times, and tie it around your chin so it stays in place. </p>

<p> The thicker the better," Dr. Soe-Lin says. "Theres a lot of discussion now about what kind of homemade masks are best and whether bandanas, for instance, are really protective. I would say for bandanas, you should double them up if you can, because theyre so thin. </p>

<p>If you decide to cut up an old t-shirt and use it to make a face covering, you should also be sure there are two layers of fabric.</p>

<h1> Make sure your DIY mask covers your nose and mouth.  </h1>

<p>Tie the fabric so it completely covers your nose and mouth, leaving no gaps between your face and the fabric, Dr. Soe-Lin advises. </p>

<p>Once you tie your scarf or bandana, it should stay tied tightly until you return home. </p>

<p>Other things to consider: You should also make sure you can remove the garment without touching your face, and you should be able to wash it daily or after every use. </p>

<h1> Will fabric face masks really protect me from novel coronavirus? </h1>

<p>As for whether fabric face coverings are effective protection against the novel coronavirus, the answer is yes, as long as you're also <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/a31481769/social-distancing-coronavirus/" id="584398fd-a8a5-382c-a3d9-d857d2b7f3f3">  social distancing </a> and washing your hands.</p>

<p> "If youre infected, especially if youre asymptomatic, it actually will keep in a lot of large droplets from sneezes or coughs, and if youre not infected, in addition to the social distancing and hand-washing, it will protect you from very large droplets," Dr. Soe-Lin says. </p>

<p>On a societal scale, if everyone covers their faces, those who are infected will keep viral droplets in, and those who are not infected will keep viral droplets out. </p>

<p>I think the great thing about masks is theyre the only intervention I can think of that's completely equitable," Dr. Soe-Lin says. </p>

<p>On the flip side, medical and surgical masks should be reserved for medical professionals battling COVID-19 in hospitals. (There's still a very serious mask shortage.) Anyone whos not a frontline health worker should absolutely not be wearing an N95 or surgical mask," Dr. Soe-Lin says. </p>

As cases of <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/a31198534/coronavirus-symptoms-vs-cold-flu/" id="c5aa1726-4b89-339d-a726-14375bafa677">  novel coronavirus </a> continue to rise across the U.S., public health are finally beginning to urge people to wear fabric face masks in public when leaving the house for essential activities.

Should You Use A Bandana Or A Scarf As A Face Mask When You Go Out?

<p>The first graphic is a bar graph showing that 80.9 percent of novel coronavirus cases are mild, 13.8 percent are severe, requiring hospitalization, and 4.7 percent are critical, requiring intensive care. Each graph in the data pack features a headline such as "The Majority of Infections Are Mild," and "The Majority of People Recover." The pushback is coming from folks who believe the headlines and data are misleading, and taking the attention away from the real problem: healthcare systems becoming overwhelmed as a result of too many Covid-19 patients. </p>

<p>Chiara Ferragni, for example, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/B9hz_pqBdyS/" id="99b17996-01e0-319a-aeee-c860ca1ced1e">  commented </a> , "The problem is not the mortality rate but the numbers of people that could get sick at the same time. No healthcare system has the right amount of intensive care units that would be needed if this virus reach a lot of people at the same time. Thats whats happening here in Italy. Please dont send the wrong message."</p>

<p><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Shannon-Sovndal/e/B001H6WWB6%3Fref=dbs_a_mng_rwt_scns_share" id="2c16bfe6-8574-3002-ad35-95000cbe6ff2">  Dr. Shannon Sovndal, MD </a> , medical director for the fire department, police department and dispatch center of Boulder, Colorado, took time to analyze the graphic for Women's Health amidst his work with the city to prepare for an influx of Covid-19 patients. (As of Friday evening, there were 72 cases in Colorado, according to <a href="https://kdvr.com/news/coronavirus/first-colorado-coronavirus-death-reported-in-el-paso-county/" id="ec8e0ffd-8898-354f-a2ed-f25a4b66e2dd">  Fox31 News Denver </a> .)</p>

<p>"When I look at [these infographics], these stats, they're not inappropriate and they're not wrong," Dr. Sovndal told Women's Health. But he agrees they don't tell the full story of what's going on. </p>

<p>Whenever there's a new disease on the rise, he explained, there's limited information available, and it's constantly changing. "If we put out the information we have at that time, that information might change over the course of the next few days or even hours. You need to look at the date, where the data is coming from." </p>

<p>According to Information is Beautiful's website, the COVID-19 data pack <a href="https://informationisbeautiful.net/visualizations/covid-19-coronavirus-infographic-datapack/" id="16140156-41fc-3150-a0a0-7359d744c11b">  has been updated a few times </a> over the last three days, and the viral graphics circulating Instagram are from March 9th.</p>

<p>However, there's an even bigger reason why the data doesn't tell the full story of COVID-19. </p>

<p>The reason most counties are asking people to stay home and practice "social distancing" is not so much to prevent themselves from getting sick (for most healthy people, symptoms are indeed mild)though for the elderly or infirm, that's certainly the case. Instead, most of us are being asked to stay home and practice "social distancing" so we don't give the illness to the elderly or immunocompromised, who are more likely to become hospitalized from COVID-19. </p>

<p>In the United States, Dr. Sovndal says, "The case rate is advancing at a pretty similar rate to other countries. As a person gets it, they're likely going to give it to 2.5 other people." By staying home, we're "flattening the curve" and containing the spread of COVID-19 so hospitals have enough beds to treat every patient. </p>

<p>"As an emergency physician, I am very concerned about COVID-19," Dr. Sovndal says. "I'm inundated currently because I'm the medical director for our city and for our county, getting prepared for if we get too many patients for our resources. We're spending a lot of time getting ready for this, and it does make me nervous because we have a large at-risk population." </p>

<p>He added: "I think that it's wise for every family to be prepped for at least some incident where you're going to have to stay at home for a while. That's just good practice." </p>

<p>Ballet superfan <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/life/a30809602/jennifer-garner-escaped-convict-bobby-love-story/" id="580f2b9e-2db5-360f-ad58-f6a97980889f">  Jennifer Garner </a> doesn't waste an opportunity to show off her dance moves . On one of the moving walkways at the San Francisco International Airport, the 47-year-old actress practiced some of the skills she's learned from her ballet-inspired dance workouts. Other travelers were a little confused (which, fair), but Jen didn't seem to care.</p>

<p>Clearly, Jen follows ballet closely, like some people follow baseball. Case in point(e): Her shoutout to ABT principal dancer Misty Copeland, who announced yesterday that she would not be dancing the role of Giselle with the American Ballet Theater (ABT) at the Kennedy Center, citing an unspecified injury. "Im going to be fine, but as dancers, we have to listen when our bodies speak to us," she said on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/B8hYh8WDrmz/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link" id="32dbe581-9384-39a9-ac43-550cb4fa1150">  Instagram </a> . <p>Today, Orangetheory Fitness announced that it will start rolling out a new wearable device in 2020 that will attach to <a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07XR5T85R?" id="f2c4c899-0e1a-3772-a967-0e5fa1501216">  Apple Watch </a> bands and eliminate the need for the armbands and chest straps the company currently uses to track heart rate and performance data while members are working out, according to <a href="https://www.cnet.com/news/orangetheory-launches-otbeatlink-to-track-your-workout-class-performance-from-your-apple-watch/" id="8f30fc92-8752-3968-af82-ea8961faee3a">  CNET </a> .</p>

<p>Called the OTbeat Link, the device will be available at Apple and Orangetheory locations for $129, and snap onto the Apple Watch band, syncing with the wearer's <a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07XR5T85R?" id="f2c4c899-0e1a-3772-a967-0e5fa1501216">  Apple Watch </a> and transferring performance data. Two iOS apps will also launch: OTassist and OTcoach. OTassist will be a "paperless and deskless" management app so members can check in and book classes, while OTcoach will allow trainers to view members' performance data and spend 10 percent more time with their clients.</p>

<p>"Member experience has been at the forefront of all that we do since the brand's inception," says Dave Long, CEO and Co-Founder of Orangetheory Fitness. "We're addressing the needs of our members by providing an integration between the workout they do and the technology they use, leading to a seamless fitness experience and healthier life." The company is known for generating the "Orange Effect" in members, where they continue to burn calories for "up to 36 hours after a 60-minute workout."</p>

<p>"Apple Watch is designed to help people live a better day by being more active," said Jay Blahnik, senior director of fitness for health technologies at Apple, according to the press release. "With workout tracking, Apple Pay and a new membership program, we are thrilled Orangetheory Fitness is integrating Apple Watch into a comprehensive experience for their customers."</p>

Well, in a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GsK5feFt1U" id="446ce378-da3c-3622-a4f4-d2ddeb143750">  new video for </a> <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GsK5feFt1U" id="e5c6f814-8998-3b4a-ac4e-508d351b7bf8">  Vogue </a> , she got real about "the products and methods" she uses for her "fave Tracee look: foundation-free &amp; fabulous curls." In the video, <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/life/a29637616/tracee-ellis-ross-net-worth/" id="92896a6f-68a7-3101-a362-cbba847cf0c6">  the Black-ish star </a> goes into every last detail when it comes to her skincare routine to get that glowy, foundation-free look at 47.</p>

<p>When she gets out of the shower, Tracee uses <a href="https://www.retrouve.com/product/baume-ultime/" id="f441f4d9-7d8d-3f56-ad1e-c8ad8d98baf9">  Retrouv body oil </a> "all over" and Terri Lawton serum on her face. "Some people spend time putting on makeup. I spend time hydrating my skin," she said in the video, while rubbing the serum into her skin. Then, she uses <a href="https://shoprescuespa.com/le-grand-serum-1.html" id="d01511e3-78ff-3712-a4aa-0e41e2240d01">  Biologique Le Grand Serum </a> , which is more like a gold spray. While putting this on, Tracee opened up about how she used to pick at her skin and did her own extractions, until her mom (a.k.a. Diana Ross) made her stop and she started getting facials at a young age instead.</p>

<p>Next, she applies <a href="https://shop.yonkausa.com/puffiness-dark-circles-phyto-contour.html" id="0f0f7957-e391-3296-a337-36396ce57280">  Yon-Ka eye cream </a> and <a href="https://shoprescuespa.com/la-grande-creme.html" id="5e81f0fe-b506-37a3-a4de-86ddad439592">  La Grande Creme </a> using a spatula, so she doesn't have to dig her fingers into the moisturizer. "Very sterile," she explained. Then, Tracee "heats the cream up" in her hands before rubbing it all over her face.</p>

<p>To make sure her skin is absorbing all of the skincare products, she uses a small vibrating face massager from Amazon. "I don't drink coffee, I rarely eat sugar, I don't like to drink alcohol when I know I'm going to be on camera, which is all the time," she said. "Instead of coffee, I like to dry brush my body or vibrate my face or roll my face or Bushan my face and wake it up, because I'm often at work at five in the morning." From there, she does a drop of <a href="https://www.retrouve.com/product/intensive-replenishing-facial-moisturizer/" id="dd13c94e-6e85-3eff-ab2c-77e7ee5fb23d">  Retrouve Intensive </a> and Biologique Tool Serum. "Who needs makeup?" she asked.</p>

<p>Still, once it is time to apply her makeup i.e. just lips and browsTracee revealed she does her lip products in reverse order. "With Ruby Woo, for some reason I like to do the lipstick first, and then the liner," she said. "I use the Cherry lip pencil from MAC. I can do lip liner without a mirror, but I'm looking at you, so...but I can close my eyes." </p>

<p>Tracee explained that she became a makeup master, thanks to being raised in the entertainment industry. "I spent a lot of time hidden on the floor of my mom's dressing room while she did her own hair and makeup," she said while penciling in her brows. "My mother is so self-sufficient with her beauty, and I think it's informed so much of what I believe. I feel like every person should be able to access their most beautiful self and feel beautiful in their own bathroom without having to be dependent on someone outside of themselves." </p>

<p>On this week's Halloween-themed <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/life/g29127937/dancing-with-the-stars-cast-members-dated/" id="eff5db2d-5f60-3df2-a0b0-83b9ca90b5c8">  Dancing with the Stars </a> , country singer Lauren Alaina scared judges and audiences alike by revealing that she's been competing in the televised dance show with three hurt ribs, one of which is definitely broken. Unclear about the other two.</p>

<p>She and dance partner Gleb Savchenko did a vampire-themed tango to the tune of "Whatever Lola Wants" by Sarah Vaughan, and after receiving 9/10 from all three judges, scoring a 27 out of 30, Carrie Ann Inaba told Alaina that her core looked strong, which prompted the big reveal. </p>

<p>Host Erin Andrews asked Lauren about her rib injury, and Lauren replied, "I have three." </p>

<p>"On the right side, and then one on the other side," Savchenko added. </p>

<p>When she said my core looked strong I looked straight at Gleb because all I have been trying to do is pretend my ribs arent broken this whole competition, Lauren added. I fractured the one on the left the first week of the show and I havent had these X-rayed, but they dont feel great. </p>

<p>Despite her injuries, Lauren still tied for highest score of the night, making her a fan favorite to take home the Mirror Ball.</p>
