<p>These round bumps found just beneath the skins surface look just like epidermoid cysts, (and the similarities dont stop there). Both are white or yellow in color, are derived from hair follicles, and are filled with macerated keratin (AKA wet skin cells). So how can you tell the difference between the two? It all comes down to location. </p>

<p>Ninety percent of cysts that occur on the scalp are pilar cysts, and they have a thicker wall to them, says Dr. Lee. The protein responsible for keeping our skin and hair strong, keratin, usually moves to the surface of our skin. However, if and when these keratin cells move deeper into the skin, they can potentially multiply forming a pilar cyst. They can run in families and are most common in women and middle-aged individuals. Its not uncommon for a person to have more than one of these growing on their scalp, she adds. </p>

<p>These cysts form in the sebaceous glands and are lined with oil glands. While anyone can get a steatocystoma (pronounced stee-at-oh-cycst-oma), they usually first pop up on an individual in their 20s. The most effective treatment of steatocystomas is the surgical removal of them, says Dr. Lee. These are not life threatening, so they dont have to be removed, but many people who have them dont like the appearance of them and sometimes they can get inflamed, which can lead to scarring. </p>

<p>Both blackheads and whiteheads are comedones found within our pores. A blackhead is an open comedone, meaning that the clogged pore is open to the surface of the skin, and the air has oxidized the dirt, debris, and oil clogging it, turning it black, Dr. Lee says. </p>

<p>At first glance, it can be easy to mistake milia (small, superficial cysts), for whiteheads (clogged pores), because they both look like small white bumps, but its the location that can help you determine if you do, in fact, have milia, (which is also commonly known as baby acne). </p>

<p>Milia usually appear around the eyes or on the top portion of your cheek, whereas whiteheads are more common on the chin and forehead where more oil is produced, Dr. Lee says. There is also a difference in how they look. Whiteheads have a white center and are usually a little red and inflamed on the edges. The area around milia is not red or inflamed. </p>

<p>If you do suffer from milia, be diligent about your skincare routine. "Avoid occlusive, comedogenic (pore-clogging) products on the skin," Dr. Lee says. <p>Also classified as a benign tumor, a lipoma is a cluster of fatty tissue that grows underneath the skin. While they arent likely to get infected (nor are they dangerous), a person may elect to have them removed because of how they look as they evolve. They tend to grow slowly, but they do grow over time, Dr. Lee says. If they get to a large size they can distort your skin and be a source of embarrassment.</p>

But hair can only absorb so much. If its hydrated from within (with oils or conditioners), it wont seek moisture from the air, which lifts the cuticle and causes it to frizz.</p>

<h1> 1. Use a moisturizing, sulfate-free shampoo. </h1>

<p>Dry, damaged hair is more susceptible to hair-raising humidity, so the first step to fighting frizz starts with a hydrating shampoo sans sulfates. </p>

"Early treatment prevents scarring and hyperpigmentation, so it helps to catch cystic acne early," says says Tony Nakhla, MD, dermatologist and founder of <a href="https://eighthdayskin.com/" id="df7e4b25-6f72-3b43-ada9-63879f94c83c">  Eighth Day skincare </a> .</p>

<p>While a quick visit to your dermatologist for a cortisone shot is definitely the fastest way to get rid of a cystic breakout, it's not always feasible. So try these at-home steps to help deal with your painful breakout.</p>

<h1> 1. Exfoliate the spots with acid. </h1>

<p>The first step to treating cystic acne is to ensure your breakout is free of makeup, dirt, and oil that can further clog your pores. If your skin is actively breaking out, it's already inflamed and sensitive, so opt for a nonabrasive acid exfoliator, like one of these <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/beauty/g27131890/best-exfoliator-for-acne/" id="edb51419-1eee-319f-ac1d-20c023c60a31">  exfoliators specifically for acne-prone skin </a> .</p>

<h1> 2. Kill the acne-causing bacteria. </h1>

<p>Once youve cleansed your face, youll want to ensure you get rid of the bacteria thats responsible for the face invader. Over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide products, like this one from La Roche-Posay, will kill the bacteria within the follicle that is the culprit of the inflammatory process, says Irene Gladstein, MD, founder and medical director at Enhance Aesthetic Arts in New York City. </p>

<p>Due to the inflammation surrounding cystic zits, they stick out like a sore thumb. The easiest way to bring them back down: ice. Ice constricts the blood vessels and assists with swelling, says Dr. Gladstein. If the swelling doesnt improve, however, you might need a script from your dermatologist for something stronger. Often times cystic acne requires oral medication to curb the inflammation from inside the body, says Dr. Williams. </p>

<p>An <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Cortizone-10-Max-Strength-Crme-Ounce/dp/B001KYA8KW?" id="743fbfc9-9914-3a5c-a069-214e06545181">  over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream </a> that contains at least 1% hydrocortisone can help calm redness and shrink down the size of the zit. It's important to note that the longer you leave it on, the better your results will be. "Put a heaping amount on the area of concern overnight, and that usually does the trick," says <a href="https://www.skininstituteofny.com/providers/peter-saitta-do/" id="8b957916-1ea9-368a-a159-57efb84f685b">  Peter Siatta </a> , MD, a clinical instructor at NYU's Department of Dermatology.</p>

<p>He also recommends milk soaks, which offer a deep clean and can reduce redness in the process. Simply apply three times a day for 10 minutes at a time, using a mixture of cold whole milk and water (soak a cotton pad in the mixture and press it onto skin). The secret behind a milk soak that makes it so effective? Lactic acid. The powerful alpha-hydroxy acid contains antimicrobial properties that target dead skin and clogged pores. </p>

<h1> 5. Do not (repeat: DO NOT!) try to pop it. </h1>

<p>Cystic pimples don't contain puss and never come to a head, so picking at a cystic pimple (or any bump on your face, for that matter) creates a breeding ground for bacteria and infection. Not to mention, picking one of these bad boys is the fastest route to leaving an acne scar, which is way harder to treat than the breakout. </p>

Keeping your skin moisturized with a very light lotion that wont clog your pores will protect your skin from the drying effects of any acne-combatting measures, says Dr. Gladstein. <p>Eucalyptus oil comes from the oval-shaped leaves of the eucalyptus tree, which is native to Australia. The leaves are dried, crushed, and distilled to release the powerful essential oil, says Amy Galper, co-founder of the National Association of Holistic Aromatherapy. </p>

<p> The main ingredient is cineole (also known as eucalyptol), which is known for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and aromatic properties. Australian Aboriginals used eucalyptus as a natural remedy against wounds, infections, aches, and colds. </p>

<p>Just one whiff of the minty, menthol-like aroma can open up your sinuses. It might also remind you of the locker room at Equinox: Galper says its no coincidence that eucalyptus oil is the scent of choice at spas and health clubs. "Its really great for relieving muscle aches, which is why you smell it a lot in spas," she says. </p>

<p>The most effective way to combat congestion with eucalyptus oil is steam inhalation, which allows the oil to react with mucous membranes, reducing mucus and loosening up congestion. <p>To create steam inhalation: Place one to two drops in a small bowl of steaming hot water. Drape a towel over your head to focus the steam and stand with your head at least an arms width away from the bowl. Close your eyes and breathe in deeply, allowing the vapor to enter your nose. Inhale the steam for five to 10 minutes. </p>

<p>The fresh, menthol-like aroma will help wake you up and invigorate your senses. It will also provide calming relief before you start your day. Simply fill a spray bottle with cool water and add five to 10 drops of eucalyptus oil. Spray the shower walls and turn the hot water on, allowing it to steam before you step in. Be sure to adjust the temperature accordingly. </p>

<p>Not only can eucalyptus oil alleviate sinus pressure and boost mental clarity, but it also promotes the relaxation of tense facial muscles. <p>While eucalyptus oil can work wonders in a variety of ways, Galper stresses the importance of diluting the essential oil before directly applying it to your skin-and steering clear of sensitive areas. "I wouldnt recommend it in a blend for the face, and it could be irritating if applied directly on skin," she says. "So always dilute it down." Eucalyptus oil is not for internal use, should not be ingested, and <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7651249" id="b360d1b8-b637-39d3-a290-173068051bfb">  should not be used directly on children </a> .</p>
