Lights flashed, machines beeped, people talked over and around and to me, but through the chaos, all I could see was the armed guard standing outside my room. I was terrified-not because I was being held against my will in a tiny room, but because I genuinely didnt know: Was I in a hospital or in jail? And where was my newborn baby?
