7 celebrities who have adopted children from Africa

A list of famous celebrities,actresses and musicians that you probably didn't know have adopted kids from the African region.

Several famous actors, actresses, and musicians have adopted children from Africa. Some of these celebrities adopted their children when they were infants, while others adopted kids who were older.

Business Insider SSA takes a look at some of them:

  • Madonna

The American singer has four adopted kids from Malawi. She first adopted David Banda and Mercy James in 2008 and 2009 respectively before Malawi’s High court granted her permission to adopt four-year old twins, Stella and Esther, in February this year.

Her adoption of Mercy was however mired in controversy because the child’s family claimed that they did not intend to have her permanently adopted.

The four adopted kids now add to her current brood of six children as she has a biological son and daughter.

  • Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt

The American actress has adopted seven children from different countries with one of them being Zahara Marley from Ethiopia. She adopted Zahara at six months old as a single mother in 2005 and her-then partner Brad Pritt requested to legally adopt the girl a year later.

The "Friday Night Lights" and “Nashville” actress adopted her son, Eyob, from Ethiopia in 2011. She recently opened up about the 6-year old little boy saying how he “has such an open and curious heart.”

  • Mary Louise Parker

Mary-Louise Parker adopted her daughter, Caroline, in 2007 in Ethiopia. She also gave birth to a son with Billy Crudup, Atticus, in 2007.

In 2003, Emma Thompson and her husband, Greg Wise, adopted son Tindyebwa, who was a former child soldier from Rwanda.

  • Brooke Smith

Brooke Smith, known for her role as Dr. Erica Hahn on the ABC medical drama series Grey's Anatomy, adopted a baby girl named Lucy Dinknesh Lubensky from Ethiopia back in 2003.

  • Tim Lambesis

The founding member and lead vocalist of American metal core band As I Lay Dying and his ex-wife, Meggan Murphy, adopted two daughters and a son from Ethiopia. In 2014, he pleaded guilty to charges that he tried to hire a hitman to murder Murphy.
