Before Kenyans have even gotten over the shock, of walking into empty hospitals as doctors and nurses strike reality begins to sink in, ‘poor wanjiku’ troubles have but doubled.

Just early this afternoon over 100 mental patients escaped from Mathari mental hospital, creating a nightmare for both the public and the government.

Now add this depressing news, Kenya Airways engineers downed their tools on Monday citing poor pay, lack of promotions and unfavourable shift patterns.

In a statement dated November 11, KQ engineers said they had made the complaints for a long time but that changes had not been made.

"The technical production team is the lowest paid locally, leave alone internationally. There is a pay discrepancy that is affecting our morale," they complained in the letter to chairman Michael Joseph.

They added that some of their allowances were struck off and other amounts withdrawn after the national carrier sold some of its planes.

"Flight-related allowances are now in the process of being withdrawn. The allowances were withdrawn without any consultation. This has affected us," read the letter as quoted by the Star.

The engineers want technical director Martin Haines to resign immediately for not addressing their issues.

"We have no faith in his leadership capabilities,' they said, adding he lacked skills and experience.

The engineers have vowed to carry on with the strike until the officials are removed.

This new developments comes just when Kenya Airways was beginning to recover from flight delays experienced last Saturday, after a plane from Somali crash landed on its runaway.

As a result of the go slow several passengers were stranded at the JKIA as flight were delayed.

“We would like to advice our guests that we are experiencing some delays due to a number of our technicians not showing up for work. This has caused inconveniences to our guests and is highly regrettable. We are working to reduce these disruptions”

KQ remaining staff had to put extra effort to avert a crisis and by late afternoon had manage to sort out flights delay according to a statement sent out through their twitter handle.

“Today, we had 58 flights scheduled to take off from across the network by 1pm and 51 have departed. We continue to work to reduce disruptions”

The national carrier also reassured passengers that they were consulting with the engineers to end the strike

"Our technical team is a vital part of our business and we are working together to resolve any outstanding issues," the airline said in a statement.
