EACC picks former KDF officer as new CEO

The military man took the lead during interviews

In a statement to newsrooms, the commission named former millitary intelligence officer Twalib Mbarak as the top contender to replace outgoing Halakhe Waqo.

Twalib is currently serving as the KENGEN Security and Integrity Manager and is now set to face MPs for vetting.

He was among 14 other candidates who were interviewed for the position after it was advertised on October 9.

Twalib managed to impress the interviewing panel, outshining EACC deputy CEO Michael Mubea, former KDF operations spokesman Cyrus Oguna and current EACC director of investigations Abdi Mohamud who were also gunning for the position.

PSC kept the public in the dark regarding the interviews as they kicked out journalists from the interview rooms on Tuesday.

EACC Spokesperson Yasin Amaro told reporters that the process was not open to the public. The explanation, however, sparked uproar from International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) Kenya.

"We cannot have any law that says the media is not allowed, because we are all about trying to promote transparency of not only the process but the outcome.

"Recruitment to the office of chief executive officer of the EACC should showcase our national intent to tackle vices that include patronage, corruption, nepotism," CJ executive director Samwel Mohochi said in  an interview with Daily Nation.

Should he sail through the Parliamentary vetting process, Twalib will sworn in to serve at the commission for a non-renewable term of six years.

Parliament is expected to announce the date he should appear before the Committee on Appointments, however, with the expected Christmas recess for the House it may be pushed to next year.
