Al-Shabaab planning to attack this area - police warns

Be on the watch out, especially those travelling

Mandera County Deputy Commissioner Daniel Bundotich has told a local daily through a phone call that the Wednesday 2.30 am incident has destabilized communication in the area, adding that the police managed to repel the militants.

“A loud explosion was heard and police reservists guarding the mast reported an attack at Daba City by suspected Al-Shabaab militants,” Mr Bundotich said.

He has refuted earlier claims that police may have suffered in the dawn attack and assured that no one was injured.

“The police reservists were overpowered by the attackers as they engaged in a gunfight but none was injured,” he said.

He has further confirmed that the attackers in a group of 14 to 20 who later escaped on foot destroyed a social hall in the area, before trekking back to Somalia.

He added: “Our response team including the Kenya Defence Forces, administration and Kenya police units is still pursuing the attackers and we are getting support from inside Somalia too.”

More attacks

Mr Bundotich has divulged that the police in the area have intelligence report of a more destructive attack being planned by the assailants.

“We suspect the attackers plan to plant explosives on the road or hijack buses plying the Elwak-Wajir-Nairobi road but we are ready to deal with them,” he said.

He urged locals to share information with security agencies when they see suspicious incidents or movement of foreigners from neighboring Somalia.

He added: “We are getting information from the locals, most of them fear of repercussions because Al-Shabaab sympathizers live among them.”

On Monday, two military officers died and seven others were injured when their Armoured Personnel Carrier was hit by a landmine at Damasa area, a stone throw away distance from Elwak.

Earier this month, the militants griuop suffred a blow when a senior official reportedly surrendered to the Somali National Army (SNA). The SNA commander Ahmed Mohamed Tredishe said Bishar Mumin Afrah surrendered at Hiran in Central Somalia.
