Why Uhuru will be out of the country on Thursday

This will be the first time Uhuru will be leaving the country after nearly one-year-long electioneering period.

State House spokesperson Mr Manoah Esipisu on Tuesday evening through twitter, quipped that the president would be holding bilateral talks with his South African counterpart Jacob Zuma on trade and security issues.

Pan-African issues

“His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta will visit South Africa on 11 January 2018, the first foreign trip since he was sworn in as President for his second and final term last November,” Mr Esipisu said.

He added: “President Uhuru Kenyatta will hold talks with his host, South African President Jacob Zuma, in the Indian Ocean city of Durban, centred on bilateral and pan-African issues. The leaders will be looking to deepen bilateral cooperation, and especially in the areas of trade, security, and infrastructure development.”

Security threats

Mr Esipisu also divulged that the two heads of state would review the security threats and levels in terror ridden Somalia and war torn ridden South Sudan.

“Kenya and South Africa are also key players in peace building on the African continent, and the leaders will review progress in countries such as Somalia and South Sudan,” he said.

Last year, Kenya and South Africa considered establishing a joint business council and joint technical committee to address issues related to migration and trade barriers.

The council is to bring business people on board, while the technical committee will be a government-to-government affair.

Foreign trips Uproar

In December 2015, President Uhuru Kenyatta was forced to defended his increasingly frequent trips abroad, arguing that they were positioning Kenya as a regional leader

In a statement through spokesman, Mr Manoah Esipisu, Mr Kenyatta was forced to itemise the benefits the country got from Mr Kenyatta’s travels.

The media earlier had reported that the President had made 43 trips in his three years in power, 10 more than his predecessor, retired President Mwai Kibaki, made during his tenure.
