In his unsuccessful gubernatorial bid in 2013, Gakuru did not involve his family in the campaigns and would make most of his public appearance alone.
However, his family life became the subject of political propaganda in his 2017 campaign, forcing him to unveil his wife and children.

The 51-year economist-cum-politician was married to Catherine Wahome with whom he had three sons. Catherine is a human resource expert and a corporate coach in Nairobi.
While teaching at the University of Nairobi, Gakuru’s students remember their soft-spoken lecturer joking that he had to persevere a “chalk-scribbling job” while his wife was making big money in the corporate world.
His wife has had a sterling career having worked for global brands such as Deloitte and Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC).
A family man without a doubt, the Nyeri Governor spent Monday afternoon with one his sons who is currently sitting his KCSE exams at the Alliance High School.
The Gakurus had hosted the entire class of 2017 where they entertained and motivated them ahead of the exams that started on Tuesday.

By the time of publishing this story, Catherine had not made any public appearance or comment with sources close to her indicating that she was devastated by the loss.
