18 girls believed to have been held against their will at an Islamic school have been rescued.

Detectives in Kwale County raided the Islamic school and they were expected to be put under quarantine.

Police found out about the students when a US citizen who was among the students alerted a relative in Nairobi that she was being held against her will and under torture.

A multi-agency team which raided the school is investigating the identities and parents of all the victims.

Rescue and arrests

Further, the team which includes officers from the anti-terrorism police and officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations are establishing if the girls have been subjected to indoctrination and sexual exploitation.

Kinango Police Commander Frederick Ombaka confirmed the rescue and arrests adding that six of the girls are aged between 15 and 19, and are ethnic Somalis born in Seattle, USA.

According to the police commander, some of the girls told investigators they were brought into Kenya on undisclosed dates by their relatives to study Islam.
