“I have spoken to government officials and urged for immediate thorough, independent investigations and audit to be carried out and those individuals found culpable be held accountable under Kenyan law,” Godec said.
The Health Cabinet Secretary, Cleopa Mailu, and his Principal Secretary Nicholas Muraguri, have been probed following an internal audit report that revealed the loss of billions of shillings at Afya House.
Following the expose carried out by the Nation Media Group, PS Muraguri is reported to have had threatened a journalist over details concerning the scandal at the ministry.
Step aside
Godec called on the senior officials to step aside as the investigations into the scandal are conducted.
He further urged the government to put in place systems to stop and prevent escalating corruption cases in the country.
The scandal also involved payments of millions of shillings to phony suppliers in the financial year (2015/2016).
The Public Investment Committee (PIC) last week said it will also investigate the scandal that broke out two weeks ago.
