This is why Raila Odinga is being played by Kalenjin elders and he doesn’t even know it.

Orange democratic leader and Cord Principal, Raila Odinga has been painfully shortchanged and embarrassed in a leadership title, the  ODM leader has been desperately eyeing for ahead of 2017 general elections.

This is after a section of Kalenjin lawmakers led by Ainabkoi Member of Parliament, Samuel Chepkonga laughed off Raila recent installation as a Kalenjin elder, saying the whole ceremony was an exercise in futility not to mention derogatory.

Raila was last week crowned a Kalenjin elder when he visited Meibek Karona trading center in Uasi Gishu County, the backyard of Deputy President, William Ruto.

After the installation Raila was then given the blessing to run for president come 2017.

However according to Chepkonga the whole exercise was a shameful ceremony which contravened the Kalenjin culture to say the least.

“Installation of any leader as Kalenjin elder is a sacred affair, it is done after meticulous preparations by selected elders. We were surprised to watch Raila being dressed with a baboon skin instead of the tradition colobus monkey skin. It is derogatory” Chepkonga told Hivisasa.

Chepkonga who was speaking at a weekend fundraiser in Keiyo south said the installation has no political significance.

Raila has been trying to win back the vote rich Kalenjin community for some time now, as he prepares to give another try at the presidential post. After his fall out with William Ruto the Kalenjin community deserted the ODM leader who once enjoyed fanatic support across Rift Valley.
