President Uhuru Kenyatta has awarded the Kenyan team with Ksh 100,000 each and a four-day trip to Mombasa for their splendid performance at the recently concluded IAAF championships.
The team is set to leave for Mombasa on Saturday July 22 and are expected to come back on Wednesday July 26.
President Kenyatta commended the team on their performance expressing how proud the team had made Kenya during the competitions.
“You have marketed our country. The number of people who turned out to watch the event tells about what you did for the country,” he said.
In addition to the president’s gifts, Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Culture and Arts Hassan Wario promised to reward the team and their guardians as well.
President Kenyatta further went on to applaud the organizers and officials of the event on the smooth and organizational manner the championships were carried out.
“Even if you go by the numbers of Sunday, a day I wish I was able to join you, the turnout of Kenyans coming to witness showed that Kenya can host major sporting events. We are the home of athletics. We are the home of champions. From the feedback I have received from participants from different parts of the world, they marveled at our organizational capacity,” he stated.”

The Kenyan team managed to garner up 15 medals in total; 4 gold, 7 silver and 4 bronze.
The 2017 World U18 Championships were held at the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani from July 12 to July 17.
