Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr. has called out Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi for refusing to occupy his office which he had gladly offered in his 'Occupy Parliament' protest.

According to the Senator, Mr Havi instead chose to occupy the parliament cafeteria and they seemed to have enjoyed the hospitality accorded to them in Parliament.

“I offered my office for occupation but you chose the cafeteria. I am glad you enjoyed our hospitality services. Come again Mr President,” said Mutula Kilonzo.

His words were in response to the LSK president’s tweet saying that he did not understand why people were making it a big deal, after viral pictures of them having tea in parliament went viral.

Havi who was trending at the time mentioned that people should stop blaming him, and that the kitchen is the first place one occupies after a conquest.

“I don’t know why plebs are making heavy weather out of this picture of us having tea in Parliament. In war, the Kitchen is the first-place occupying forces take over after a conquest. Acheni pang’ang’a mingi about Nelson Havi this Nelson Havi that!!!” tweeted Nelson Havi.

Occupy Parliament

The LSK and the United Green Movement Party had announced that they would hold a protest in Parliament on Monday (October 12) to call for its dissolution, following Chief Justice David Maraga’s advice to President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The much-hyped protest did however, not take place, and what emerged later was viral photos of LSK members having tea in parliament, and this angered Kenyans who felt let down, accusing LSK President Nelson Havi of being an all-talk person.

Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr on Tuesday shared his reaction to the release of Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala.

Senator Malala was released after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) withdrew charges against him.

"I have been released unconditionally by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) after dropping all charges against me," Malala tweeted.

In response, Sentor Mutula added: "We shall revisit."

Late on Monday morning the Makueni legislator had shared details of the difficult night Malala had at the Mumias Police Station.

"Sen Malala spent the night in the cold . No one to book him. No cash bail. Sen Lelegwe and Langat were released in record time even though they are alleged to have committed more serious offenses," he stated.

Senator Kilonzo was present during the dramatic arrest of Senator Malala at his home in Kitengela.

"Even if we sound emotional Mr Speaker, what I've seen today with my own eyes...When we requested the police to allow us to accompany Senator Malala to chamber today, they blocked the road and guess what Mr Speaker, they put hand cuffs on the gate to prevent us from leaving! The estate was locked using hand cuffs," Mutula narrated during Monday's Senate session.

Emotions ran high at the Senate chambers on Monday afternoon as senators sought to have the House adjourned until three of their colleagues are released from police custody.

Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr was among the Senators who openly bore their emotions on the floor of the House in support of the adjournment motion.

The Makueni Senator narrated his ordeal while he attempted to prevent the arrest of Kakamega Senator Cleopas Malala at his Kitengela home just hours prior to the Senate session.

Mutula's contributions during the session elicited an objection from Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang' who would in turn suffer the wrath of the Makueni representative.

The Makueni legislator had just shortly stated that the Senate would turn chaotic if the Speaker allowed proceedings on the revenue sharing formula to continue with the three missing senators still in police custody.

"Mr Speaker I didn't want to interrupt Hon Mutula because I feel him but could you kindly advise him not to threaten violence in the House? That would be the orderly way to proceed," Senator Kajwang' interjected.

Without hiding his indignation, Senator Kionzo Jr barked: "Senator Kajwang' is my friend but he is famous for blowing whistles so he is the wrong person to advise Sen. Mutula! Keep your cool boy! the same person who blew whistles at the president is the same one advising me about chaos?"

"What are you talking about? Listen to wisdom! Shut up and listen, this is not a laughing matter...we can walk out and allow you to pass whatever you want to pass...what the hell are you trying to do to us?" a visibly angry Mutula posed.

Mutula went on to narrate his encounter with the police who had camped at Senator Malala's residence.

"Even if we sound emotional Mr Speaker, what I've seen today with my own eyes...When we requested the police to allow us to accompany Senator Malala to chamber today, they blocked the road and guess what Mr Speaker, they put hand cuffs on the gate to prevent us from leaving! The estate was locked using hand cuffs," an irate Mutula Kilonzo Jr narrated.

He added that the officers accused Senator Malala of distributing Government of Kenya hand sanitizer in Mumias, Kakamega County on August 16, 2020.

Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr has condemned the government over Kariobangi North demolitions which left 7,000 families homeless.

The youthful senator stated that the exercise carried on Monday morning was a violation of basic human rights.

"Something is wrong with how this government treats human beings. What is happening in Nairobi, particularly the evictions, is a violation of human rights.

"What is happening to the people in Kariobangi North is a crime against humanity. There is something wrong about the way Government treats human beings; as if they were elected by cows and goats!" he stated.

Fellow senators agreed with the Minority Whip calling for legal action against those who allowed the families to settle in the contested land.

"It is completely incomprehensible as to why a government would be in a rush to render thousands of families homeless at such a time when the country is facing a pandemic and citizens are being urged to stay at home. The government is contravening its own guidelines," Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja stated.

Senator Mutula further urged the Parliamentary Committee reviewing Coronavirus Preparedness to ensure that the affected families are taken care of.

Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr on Friday came to the defense of Gire Ali, a Kenya Airways <a data-link-role-code="none" href="https://www.pulselive.co.ke/news/kenya-airways-suspends-employee-who-shared-video-of-239-passengers-on-plane-from/y1n4xh9" rel="noopener noreferrer">(KQ) employee who was suspended indefinitely</a>.

Senator Mutula argued that Kenyan laws protect citizens who disseminate information for public interest.

The Senator quoted Article 232 of the Constitution which outlines the values and principles of public service arguing: "This patriot should be promoted and his boss fired . This order will be reversed by any Court . Public interest is more important than management interests."

Mr Gire was handed a letter enforcing his indefinite suspension after his employer alleged that he took and shared a video of China Southern airlines flight that landed at JKIA on Wednesday evening.

The plane ferrying a majority of Chinese nationals was allowed to dock at the airport and the 239 passengers on board were allowed entry into Kenya.

The matter caused uproar among Kenyans online who castigated the government for allowing the passengers entry while Kenyan students in China have not been allowed to return to Kenya.
