Why Anyang' Nyong'o's latest speech has sparked fear

Nyong'o's 'State of the County' address causes jitters.

Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o’s speech during Labour Day celebrations may have passed but the impact has started spreading in his Prosperity House offices, as dozens now face sacking.

The speech which was a hardline against corruption in the county came on the heels of an ongoing intensive audit by the Auditor General who unearthed dubious deals in the county, leading to massive losses of finances.

Speaking in Kisumu, the governor maintained that upon the completion of the audit, which he welcomed, no one implicated in the uncouth behavior would be spared.

“There were claims that there are cartels operating from Prosperity House (Governor’s office) and so I invited the Auditor General to conduct an audit. They are currently filing the report and I want to assure you that anyone implicated will be dealt with,” he said.

He added: “Those hired through the back door and even those who hired themselves will be made known and dealt with,"

The sentiments of the governor came amid rising concerns that the County Public Service Board may have succumbed to corrupt induvial who found their way into the government without proper documents.

“We must have a board that is transparent. We will establish that board whether someone likes it or not,” the governor said in his speech.

A feud broke out in the Board after the suspension of the County Secretary Dr Olango Onudi. The board which is chaired by Nashon Oguya, has been compromised to an extent of threatening to ground operations in the county.

Reports indicated that the board suspended Dr Onudi over claims of abuse of office, but the secretary stayed put and continued discharging his mandate, prompting a stand-off. Onudi said the board lacked authority to send him home, arguing that it did not appoint him.
