Kitui Governor-elect Charity Ngilu has made a surprise request for her inauguration ceremony slated for August 22.

Ngilu has rejected a Sh6 million budget for the inauguration budget celebrations ceremony scheduled to take place at the Kitui showground.

According to The Star, the Governor-elect said she only required a Bible to be brought at the Kitui showground for the inauguration ceremony.

“All we need on that day is the Bible and venue and it certainly does not cost Sh6 million. Let us be sensitive to the poor in all our actions,” Ngilu told the organisers of the event and the county transition committee led by County Commissioner Boaz Cherutich.

She maintained it made no sense to use millions on a one-day event while thousands of people are suffering due to water shortage in Kitui.

Ngilu directed that the Sh6 million be channelled to repairing and making the water trucks operational so that they begin supplying the commodity to residents.

The governor-elect promised residents that her administration would be accessible to all and open-minded to everyone.

“All residents, whether, donning sandals or barefooted, even those with dirty clothing, have free access to the governor’s office. It is an office that without discrimination belongs to everyone. We must stop being bosses and be servants of the people,” Ngilu promised.

The move is similar to that made by Nairobi Governor-elect Mike Sonko who turned down Sh25 million set aside for his inauguration ceremony.

Sonko instead ordered the money be directed to offset salaries owed to Nairobi County workers.
