A Flying Squad detective on Monday evening succumbed to injuries caused after he was shot to times by members of a robbery ring.

The officer had been pursuing the robbers after they were caught on camera stealing from a lady in Mombasa.

Taveta divisional police commander (OCPD) Lawrence Maroa confirmed the incident adding that the detective had identified the suspects before they killed him.

"He was the one who identified them. They shot him two times," Mr Maroa stated.

Residents of Taveta town who witnessed the scene scampered for safety as the suspects fled to evade arrest.

"They escaped using a boda boda towards Holili. The boda boda was abandoned at the border and they then escaped on foot

"The operation is ongoing. We are doing all we can to arrest them," Maroa added.

Flying Squad is a department within the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) which conducts high level operations and are normally in plain-clothes.

OCPD Maroa also confirmed that five suspected members of the roberry gang were arrested in Mombasa on Sunday.

The suspects were identified as Brighton Naiya Manyala, Mohamed Hassan, Chris Odhiambo Omondi, Evans Munyoki Mburiro and Mutonyi Nzamba.
